Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Brooks.
Alicia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi! Well, a little about myself, we have to start from the very beginning. I am born and raised in Nashville, yes… One of the few… And I grew up going to Opryland! Unfortunately, I was too small to ride any of the rides, but I was absolutely obsessed with their shows. I would sit and watch every single one of them, so much, where I became friends with several of the dancers. From that moment on, my entire life changed, yes, at two years old. The performers would pick me up on stage and I would do the dances with them, my grandma made me an outfit to match them so I could look just like them, and everyone knew me there. So that’s when, my mom put me in Dance. At two years old, my passion grew and I told everyone, from the very beginning, I was going to grow up to be a professional dancer and then own my own Dance Studio, and that, is exactly what I did.
No, it was definitely not “easy “getting here, and there were definitely a lot of bumps along the way, but I am so incredibly thankful to be sharing my passion, my college degree, and my love, as an art form and as a full-time job, now owning my own studio.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like I mentioned earlier, the road was not always smooth. You are told 1 million times before you were told yes, people will try to tear you down, people will lie straight to your face, people will go back on their word- I have had several people say, well what’s gonna be your “real job “you can’t make a career out of teaching Dance“ “what are you gonna do? Just dance the rest of your life?“ And more ,but as many people that do that, there are more that support you, in every step of the way, that believe in you, and that stand by your side.-so that is what I’ve always chose to look at, and I’ve always ignored the rest.
Plus, then it makes it an even better feeling, knowing that you prove them all wrong, but you proved yourself right!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a dance teacher, choreographer, owner, costume, design, designer, and creator, and music, editor.
My main focus is proper dance education.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
As a dancer, the industry is forever changing. New dance moves are created, old dance moves are brought back, clothing, styles change, Music has a huge impact on Dance… Etc.! The trend never stop.
I do believe that we are shifting back to true technique, which I may huge fan of!
