Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Austin Hagood.
Hi Ryan Austin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I took an internship at a local design firm when I was 22 years old and trained in a small boutique design and architecture firm for six years before going on my own in 2008 amid the recession. Taking any job I could get, from drapery or just wallpaper to designing a single room when I got lucky. I was on my own until 2013 when I grew my team and have never looked back. Now with a team of five, we tackle mostly residential projects nationwide with a select few hospitality and commercial projects.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say the early years were tough, especially during the 2008 recession. Also I had to separate from a business partner that felt much like a divorce. Business has been smooth sailing since!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have developed a very recognizable palette in my design projects. There is always an underlying sense of calm, neutral texture with a focus on architectural details and livability. I have had some very fun creative clients in the past ten years that have pushed me to use pattern and color in ways I didn’t feel comfortable. My interior spaces always remain timeless and classic, even when looking back at my work nearly 20 years ago.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I think my whole career is based on good luck. Being self-taught in this industry is very difficult and I had to make a lot of mistakes to learn and grow. I’ve been beyond lucky to have a solid team that I work with who support my crazy ideas and remain steadfast as we grow as a firm.
