Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Perry.
Hi Ryan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my musical journey at 19 years old in 2009. Thanks to my Mom secretly signing me up for random Karaoke at a local bar and my Dad saving me by getting up to sing with me because I was too nervous to do it alone. We sang Family Tradition by Hank Jr. I was terrible but people still clapped and that feeling is something I couldn’t stop thinking about. So I got to work, I landed a job as a Karaoke host, which helped me cut my teeth in the entertainment aspect. I sang all the time. Through the years I learned some guitar chords and started cover bands and that lead to writing my own songs. After my first time visiting Nashville in 2012, I started coming down once a month for awhile and networking. Then I met my, now Wife of 9 Years, in 2014 and we had plans to move to Nashville. But with a surprise positive pregnancy test we went back to the drawing board and I put down the Guitar and grabbed my work boots. So it became a full time job lifestyle with a Weekend warrior dream. But I had a new drive and a newly matured since of grind. Fast forward 7 years, I was able to leave that construction job to perform music full time based out of my hometown until a exactly a year ago this month. Now today, I am proud to say I am a father of 2, I have my first, purely organic 1 Million Streams on a single song and my 1 year anniversary as a resident of Nashville, TN.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think the most important but absolute hardest thing to do is always count the small wins. Thats something that took a long time to realize. Music has its extremely tough obstacles daily. But I guess it’s all perspective of the artist and their life. As a homeowner, father of 2 and Husband, I have had other obstacles that made music a safe place, but it has also been a curse. The biggest obstacle has been providing a solid lifestyle for them with doing what I love instead of what was safe. It’s hard to face rejection time and time again doing the only thing you feel like you’re good at. I’ve been lied to, scammed, gas-lit, cancelled, blasted on Social Media, laughed at. Although I don’t care what anyone says or thinks…except my children, that may one day see those hurtful things. You can just pray they don’t believe any of it. Keeping a clean name is very important to me because I don’t want to cost my Wife or children any opportunities in this life.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a music artist, performer and songwriter here in Nashville, TN. I love creating new styles of music and finding unique ways to incorporate lyrics that are not what you would normally hear in a song. I am known for an edgy rock style of country music. Almost experimental post-metal country core. I am most proud of the fact that I have 3 things that most would do anything just to have 1 of. Which is a strong marriage and partnership of a decade and counting, 2 beautiful happy and healthy Children and finally, doing what I love more than anything…to provide for the first 2 things. I think what sets me apart from others isnt anything I do publicly or physically, I think it’s the fact that I find excitement in chaos. If I am told it cant be done, I will find a way to get it done. Large moments of rejection of course knocks me on my ass, but it’s just giving me a chance to sit and rest for a minute, while I plan my next move. I take it as God didn’t want me there. So I find somewhere or something else.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I think idolizing someone who already has it all is too far out of reach. Idolize the person that is still working and struggling but is happy where they’re at in life. Idolize someone that can teach you that you’ll never find happiness in the future if you cannot find it in the present. My Dad has always said “Money is only something you need if you live until tomorrow, and tomorrow…I’ll make some more.”
