Conversations with Kennie Dozier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kennie Dozier.

Hi Kennie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I actually started off in the church-I wasn’t interested in theater at all. I wasn’t pursuing acting, I wasn’t trying to be on stage, and I wasn’t even a regular theatergoer. I was simply serving as a youth leader when someone at my church asked me to step into a small part in a show.

That one experience changed everything. In that moment, I found my purpose, and that purpose has grown into a career spanning more than 20 years. Since then, I’ve worn many hats: actor, theater founder, artist, artistic director, producer, host, stage manager, and more.

As I often tell people, theater allowed me to finally breathe as a human being. The first time I stepped on stage, I knew-I had found what I was created to do. And here I am.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I had a lot of challenges at first. First, I had to learn how to be an actor. Then I had to figure out how to find the time to be an actor. Balancing work, life, and family became a real challenge. And once you start a theater company, the questions multiply: How do you build it? How do you get it off the ground? How do you attract audiences? How do you earn support from others?

So many layers make the journey difficult-becoming an actor, launching a company, growing it-but the greatest lesson has been perseverence. Stay the course. Don’t quit. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. And, most importantly, allow God to guide you.

I found true balance when I realized I can do nothing without Christ. Every day I ask the Lord where I’m going and what I’m supposed to do. That shifted everything. Many of my struggles came from trying to do things my way instead of God’s way. But when I turned it over to Jesus, the path became clear.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the Founder and Artistic Director of a theater company. I am most proud of building a theater company that creates opportunities—on and off the stage. My passion is developing actors by strengthening their confidence, and I’m especially proud of the space we’ve created for young people.

What sets me apart is that I do all of this with God-given creativity, God-given people, and minimal resources that somehow produce maximum impact. We tell meaningful, community-driven stories that not only entertain but also open doors. Over time, this platform has grown into a launching pad for careers in the theater industry—for actors, designers, costumers, and the many talented individuals who work behind the scenes.

But my greatest joy comes from giving youth the chance to explore their gifts. Even if they never pursue acting professionally, they get to experience the craft—whether onstage or backstage—and I get to watch their faces light up as they discover what they’re capable of. Seeing them step into something new, uncertain at first, and then shine with confidence onstage is powerful. It builds self-esteem. It teaches them that they can do anything if they commit to it.

Theater has an uncanny ability to do that—to transform. You start with nothing, and it becomes something beautiful. That transformation, both in the work and in the people, is what keeps me inspired.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I never had any formal training. I did not go to college for this.
