Daily Inspiration: Meet Jess Soelberg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jess Soelberg.

Hi Jess, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been surrounded by music all of my life. As an infant, my mom worked as a private vocal and piano instructor. I would sit through the lessons, completely captivated by the way that my mom used the piano and her own voice to train and coach her students.

My ear was trained and molded to hear and understand music since birth, and I developed perfect pitch at a young age and could easily tell when my mom was singing the theme song from “Thomas The Tank Engine” in any other key than C major! As soon as I could sit upright, I started studying classical piano which helped me learn composition, ear training, and overall musicianship. Music was a huge part of my early education and an even bigger part of my childhood.

As a teenager, I started diving into popular music, becoming increasingly intrigued by the guitar, bass, and other keyboard instruments. I started playing pop and rock music with my friends in high school, where I started learning how instruments should work together. I constantly worked at my musicianship, quickly and steadily learning how music should sound and how it could sound the best that it could.

As soon as I got my hands on GarageBand, I started recording the songs that my friends and I were writing together. Ever since then, I’ve been working at improving my ability to produce music and help people make their music sound the best that it could. I graduated with a 4.0 GPA from the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences and moved to Nashville right after I finished my schooling. For the past two and a half years, I’ve been super lucky to be integrated into the amazing music community here and I’ve been able to work on all sorts of very cool projects with amazing musicians.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been long and rough at times, but honestly I’ve really enjoyed the ride! When my wife and I moved here from Arizona, we knew one person in the whole state of Tennessee and that person was a classmate of mine that had also just moved. It took a little bit to find my people and I remember spending a lot of time meeting people for coffee, going to shows and events, and doing whatever else I could to integrate myself into the big pond. There were times that I wasn’t sure how I was going to fit due to the fact that there are so many talented people here, but I’ve learned that there truly is a place for people that work hard and treat people right.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a music producer that focuses on real music made by real musicians playing real instruments. A lot of the time, I’m arranging and playing all of the parts in the music that I produce! I specialize in keys, bass, and guitar but there are a lot of other fun toys in my studio that I use to create the music that I create.

I primarily work in the pop rock genre, but I have been known to dabble in country, R&B, and soul. I only take on projects that I’m sure that I would crush, and genre generally doesn’t have much to do with what I’ll work on and what I won’t. My clients often share that they are happy with the “character” that I impart on their music and while I’m not 100% sure what they mean by that, I’m happy that my personal influences, techniques, and creativity help make their music unique and authentic to their respective artistry.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory has to be seeing U2 in concert. My dad got tickets for me and my two brothers and it was a really cool full circle moment for me. My dad listened to U2 all my life and I can definitely say that they were one of the biggest reasons that I wanted to pursue a life and career full of music.

Say what you will about their music, but you can’t disagree with the fact that they put on a fantastic show. The sound was awesome, the visuals were electric, and their stellar musicianship was on full display.
