Daily Inspiration: Meet Christopher McGlothlin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher McGlothlin.

Hi Christopher, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I got my start by watching plenty of movies growing up. My favorite movie was Jaws, and I would recreate scenes from the movie with toys when I was young. I eventually started to make small movies with my Nintendo 3DS and a camera that I got for Christmas. I then started a YouTube Channel where I can post all of my movies. I then met a bunch of people on YouTube through the Godzilla Community, where I begun collaborating with those people with their films. That’s when I found out that I love editing and visual effects, and I’ve been developing my skills ever since then. I have worked on many short films and videos, as well as a feature length Godzilla Fanfilm called Godzilla Apex, where over 500 VFX shots had to be done.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has its ups and downs. Being a VFX Artist means that you have to be perfect with the outcome of the shot. It can’t be noticeable in a bad way. The best visual effects are usually the ones that go unnoticed because it’s to help further the immersion of the story. I’ve been able to grow and improve my skills throughout the years, and have directors that challenge me with new ways to get shots done. I always appreciate the challenge.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize mainly in VFX, but I wear multiple hats. I have done directing, editing, sound design, foley, and writing. I’ve also done professional work as a Multimedia Journalist, where I had to go to the scene, film, interview, and edit the story together to post. I’ve also done real estate work filming businesses to help further their impact online. I’ve also managed several social media pages to also spread their impact in the community.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Stick by your friends. They will always be there for you and help you up when you are down. And you do the same for your friends. I don’t really have much advice for a mentor.
