Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody Duncan.
Hi Melody, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a family of musicians. My grandmother, mom, dad and brother are all musical. I feel really grateful that I was exposed to a lot of different genres from an early age. I think that’s one of the reasons my original music has a mix of genres. Making and sharing music is genuinely one of my favorite things about life. I started out playing/singing in local bands and churches. After that I had the opportunity to tour for over a decade with a variety of projects. I’ve played in rock n’ roll bands, Americana groups, jazz groups, classical settings and many other enjoyable projects. I’ve been able to see so much of the world with music and I’m forever grateful. My hope is to continue sharing music as a way of giving light and love to community. I think music is one of our most beautiful universal languages that sometimes expresses things we can’t otherwise say with just words. Several years ago I had the most incredible experience of playing music for a large group of wolves at a Colorado wildlife sanctuary. As I was playing my violin they began to sing and howl with the music. Together we filled those mountains and surrounding valleys with a hauntingly beautiful song. It was an impactful moment for me, reflecting on how all of us can connect with music. Since then I’ve adopted the wolf as a symbol of harmony for myself and for anyone else who sees music as a way of connecting. I hope to continue sharing music to remind people: you are not alone in the way you feel…and you are already enough.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think creating a career in the arts can come with a variety of inherit challenges that is not for the faint of heart, but I’m still grateful for the experience of it all.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a multi instrumentalist/audio engineer with a solo project, but I also often freelance as a violinist/fiddle player. Being a freelance musician has brought me a lot of amazing opportunities to support some incredible musicians. I’ve played and opened shows with groups alongside Emmylou Harris, Charlie Daniels, George Benson, John Paul White, Brandie Carlisle, Jimmy Buffet and other amazing artists. I’m always grateful and so happy for the opportunity to make music.
How do you think about happiness?
I think happiness is often a choice. So, I try to see the good in every circumstance and stay curious/open in life. I enjoy learning new things, spending time with my dog, being outside with God and nature, playing with my microscope and reading a good science fiction book. I also adore spending time with loved ones.
