Today we’d like to introduce you to Star .
Hi Star, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hmm…it started from birth *laughing* From early as I can remember, music has always been a part of me and I’ve always been into music. Growing up in my household, we listened to various types of music, but Reggae was the main source of musical nutrition, seen? I would make tapes/cds and sell them as a youth. As a child, anytime I received money, I was at the record store buying cds. My passion never stopped growing. I started to dj for Sierra Leone parties as a teenager. My first attempt at being a reggae selector (dj) was in 2009. I had some friends who were dj’s and promoters. The asked me to join them. At the time, my skills weren’t up to par. It was all love though. I was happy for the experience. At the time, I went by the name of “African Lion”. Fast forward to 2016. I got my first dj controller. This allowed me to crossover into the digital world as a dj. This truly helped my creativity. The following year, I started to dj at island vibes and I was regularly posting my mixes to SoundCloud. This helped with exposing my music to different audiences. My passion opened doors for me. By 2020-through the power of The Most High, divinity and my passion, I became a dj for WXNA. For 6 years now, I’ve been the host for “Reggae University” which airs Wednesday from 9-11 pm CST. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity. It has allowed me to interview Reggae legends, from producers to artists. It has also allowed me the opportunity to interview anyone who is associated with Reggae and the Reggae culture. I use it also as a vehicle to display our talents and concerns here within Nashville. Displaying talents: we have a growing reggae & dancehall culture here in Nashville. I like to interview promoters, singers, dj’s, etc. Charity starts at home. Dem haffi know bout de talent weh we ave ina we backyard, seen? I was thankful to use the platform and invite a guest to inform people about Hurricane Melissa. This opened doors to help for fundraising. My journey has been “musical wind”-taking me where it sees fit. I’m enjoying the ride
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been the way that it’s been designed. I’m trying to follow destiny with this. It’s been smooth for the most part. I’ve noticed people slowly discovering that they like Reggae. The only struggle I’ve had is figuring how to monetize it and gather large crowds in Nashville. Nashville is a different city, lol
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a Reggae Selector (dj). My specialty is Roots Reggae. I’m proud that I’ve been able to educate the masses about Reggae while slowly converting them. They then blossom into their own version of a Reggae lover. What separates me from others I believe is my knowledge of the music. I grew up loving Reggae. Honestly, to me it’s more than sharing my knowledge. It’s me sharing my PASSION for the music, which is undeniable
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, like most kids, I was energetic and curious. If I liked something, it was evident because i would love it. I was an intelligent, observant youth; always positive. Looking back, I can say that there was a mystique about me. I was always different. My mind works mysteriously and I’m happy to share thst with the world today
