Meet Justin Styll of Tall Boy Marketing LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Styll.

Hi justin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Franklin High and MTSU Grad. Started working in Sports Talk Radio May of 2002 at 997 WTN. then moved over to 1045 The Zone once it was formed. Left radio in 2007 to become the sales and marketing guy for Blackstone Brewery. (Where I had been doing Nashville Predators player shows for years) Beer business was fun, but Blackstone eventually pulled their beer from the market for 12 months and changed distributors while building a new brewery, so I was out of a job. Back to radio. Worked to help launch another sports talker, 1025 The Game, and was back together with several of my old friends. Near the end of 2013 I became a dad and started realizing that people were not consuming media in the same way. Advertising was changing. On Valentines Day 2014 Tall Boy Marketing was officially announced with the motto being “marketing that stands out” (I’m also 6″8″) We primarily worked with Middle TN based food and beverage clients and slowly started to grow working out on my bonus room in Antioch. The family and team eventually outgrew the Antioch house and we found a place in Bellevue that could park a lot of cars and had fantastic office spaces. We were growing! Enter Covid19. Working with so many restaurants and places that were not allowed to be open, we had to figure something out. My partner Neil saw a great opportunity with service providers and we quickly pivoted. We also realized that with no-one driving to the office, it opened up a lot more time in everyones schedule. Our core team would drive to Bellevue every day from places like Lebanon, Murfreesboro and Smyrna. With an extra 10 hours in everyone’s week and meetings lined up back to back on video calls, it was a game changer. We could work from anywhere. In July of 2019 we welcomed our 3rd child and soon after she was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. Because of CF’s respiratory issues we decided to move her to a more arid climate with less mold, mildew, pollen, etc. and ended up in Monument, CO Summer of 2021. While we do have some business here in Colorado, most of our clients and all of our employees are located in TN. I travel back and forth almost every month to visit clients, family and friends. It’s amazing to see Nashville’s growth, especially since the flood in 2010.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
media is constantly changing, so you must adapt. I love quoting Gary V’s description of advertising as the “day-trading of attention” The eyes and ears of your audience is evolving faster than it ever has now. So change is just part of the job.

Covid was another bump. That was when we pivoted from focusing on restaurants to service providers like HVAC and Window and Door companies.
