Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Johnson.
Hi Lauren, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Choose Joy Nursing began as a dream while I was working in Mother Baby at the hospital. I had the privilege of educating new parents and caring for both mom and baby in those first few days postpartum, and I always wished I could continue supporting them once they left the hospital.
I realized that many new moms didn’t receive any follow-up care until their 6-week visit, and I knew I wanted to bridge that gap by offering in-home support during the fourth trimester. Encouraged by friends and family, and feeling God’s call to step out in obedience, I started Choose Joy Nursing part-time while still working as a school nurse.
As demand grew, I began hiring and training other nurses. Eventually, I left my school nurse role to focus on CJN full-time. Soon after, we welcomed our first full-time nurse and later a full-time business manager. From there, our team has steadily grown to include more nurses, care partners, a lactation consultant, and several administrative members – all dedicated to supporting families in those critical early months.
Since 2021, we’ve expanded to four new locations (and counting) – one new city in Tennessee (Chattanooga) and three new cities in Florida (30A, Tampa, and West Palm Beach).
We also launched a concierge branch to provide post-surgical support for patients, extending our mission of compassionate and personalized care.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. One of the hardest seasons for me personally, and for Choose Joy Nursing, was when my daughter, Lily Ann, was born. She had a rare condition where she could not break down protein due to a missing enzyme in the urea cycle. Because her condition wasn’t known at birth, she became very sick, developed toxic levels of ammonia, and suffered significant brain swelling that led to a coma. She endured seizures, intensive hospital care, and weeks of uncertainty.
During that time, I stepped back from CJN to focus fully on Lily Ann’s care and to treasure every moment with her. On March 31, she became sick again with another ammonia spike, and we made the decision to bring her home. We had six precious days together, and on April 6, at exactly nine months old, Lily Ann went to be with Jesus.
Through it all, I had to trust that the team I had built could continue supporting families, and thankfully, they did – with love, professionalism, and grace. They kept the mission going while I was home with my daughter, reminding me that I wasn’t alone and that God’s provision never fails! The work we do everyday for Choose Joy Nursing is in honor of Lily Ann. So grateful for the 9 months we had with her, AND to be able to serve healthy babies and their mamas in these sweet seasons!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Choose Joy Nursing is a Nashville-based luxury night nursing company providing compassionate care for postpartum families and patients recovering from surgery. At CJN, we are proud that mom is our priority. While we love snuggling and caring for babies, we know that moms can’t care for their little ones if they aren’t cared for themselves and not all companies emphasize the mother’s care. That’s why we pour into moms (and dads!) making sure they’re eating, drinking, resting, and supported in regulating their nervous system.
We specialize in postpartum overnight care and sleep training, using a method I developed that keeps the mom’s nervous system in mind, helping both baby and parents thrive.
Every nurse and care partner on our team is extensively trained to provide the highest level of support and expertise.
We care deeply about the whole family, ensuring everyone is nurtured, supported, and set up for success. Beyond physical care, we pray over each baby, parent, and home, believing that this work is our calling from God. I’m proud that Choose Joy Nursing not only meets the practical needs of families but also nurtures their hearts, spirits, and overall well-being – truly helping each family thrive during this sacred season of life.
