Rising Stars: Meet Evan Richardson of Nolensville, Tennessee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Richardson.

Hi Evan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started a class in video production in my sophomore year of high school. As I became more invested, I gradually became more involved in the sports field. By the end of my senior year, I had completed fallen in love with using a camera and decided to expand into photography and continue working after high school. I enrolled at Freed-Hardeman University in August 2023, initially in their photography program, and collaborated with its coaches to create content for the sports team, eventually building my skills enough to receive a scholarship offer from Faulkner University in their athletics department and digital media program. I graduated with an Associate’s Degree from Freed-Hardeman in May 2025 and transferred to Faulkner a few months later, where I continued building my skills to the point where I received paying opportunities with the Crimson Tide’s Ice Hockey team and then the University of Buffalo’s Men’s Basketball team.

While I’ve mostly been focused in sports, I’ve also gained hands on experience with many other aspects of photography, including portrait photography. I’ve also mastered studio photography, owning my own lighting equipment, and I practice underwater photography, which I do under an Advanced PADI Open Water Diver’s certification.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There’s been many tough points, particularly trying to invest in greater equipment while struggling to break-even with the amount I’ve invested. These past two months have been my most expensive after I invested in the Sony a9 and FX3. But at the same time it’s been my most phenomenal months ever in terms of the attention I’ve received from major programs and social media. So while it’s been a slow and costly process, the reward has been sensational.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m mostly in sports, but I’m also quite diverse and I enjoy doing portrait, studio, and underwater photography. I have experience in droneworks through Nolensville Drone Production as well.

I promote a style heavily focused on every little detail, particularly the ones that the viewers do not typically notice on their own, in order to promote a documentary style of photography. My style of editing has also incorporated some digital manipulation and graphic design to further amplify the meaning of an image. What I’m most proud of is my potential being recognized by major programs and creators allowing me several amazing opportunities, with the main standout of these accomplishments so far being with the Crimson Tide Ice Hockey team.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’ve felt the struggle from taking a risk that costed greatly without returning much. But the takeaway helped me learn how to manage risks. I’ve advised to beginner photographers to not invest small as there was little potential to it but to not invest big when you lack experience for such high level equipment, because both options ultimately offer little return. Instead, look to start halfway up the ladder as it offers that much-needed potential while not costing too much. An example would be investing in a used $1,200 camera or less like the Sony a7iii if you want to do sports. I recently purchased the Sony a9 and fx3 as they were the best cameras I could buy for sports. They were more expensive than the income I would earn but I also took into account how they would improve my resume when I’m receiving major opportunities. Thus, I will take risks when I have enough capability to need them but also when I can get the most out of said risk.
