Today we’d like to introduce you to John Hochstetler.
Hi John, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up Amish, raised on a farm and immersed from an early age in working with my hands—farming, blacksmithing, leather and tack work, horse training, building, agriculture, and horticulture. That upbringing instilled a deep respect for craftsmanship, discipline, and hard work, as well as an understanding that quality is built through patience and care. At age 22, I made the difficult decision to leave the Amish community and step into a completely different world. With very little to my name, I left the United States and spent several years living and working abroad, including extended time in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, as well as other parts of Central America such as Guatemala. During those years, I was privileged to work in construction using a wide range of building methods and materials, and to live within multiple cultures—experiences that deeply shaped who I am today and how I approach people, work, and problem-solving.
Eventually, I returned to the U.S. and settled in Middle Tennessee, where I began working for several contractors across a wide range of niches—residential and commercial construction, metal roofing, custom carpentry, post-frame construction, and general building. Although I returned with only a few dollars in my pocket and no professional network, I relied on the skills and discipline my upbringing had given me. I started my own company humbly, doing handyman and small repair work while navigating the process of licensing, insurance, and building a legitimate general contracting business from the ground up. A few early clients took a chance on me, first with small jobs, then progressively larger projects as trust was built through consistent quality, workmanship, and follow-through.
Over time, Stellan Eoin Builders grew from small residential work into larger renovations, new homes, and commercial projects. Like many companies, we rode the COVID construction boom and have also felt the impact of the recent economic downturn—both of which have been powerful teachers. Today, we are honored to serve Nashville and the surrounding Middle Tennessee area, having worked with more than 20 local codes and permitting departments. Our work has included notable and discreet projects for prominent clients, protected by internal NDAs that emphasize privacy, respect, and professionalism. In 2024, one of our projects was recognized with a “Kitchen of the Year” award by a panel of design judges—an achievement we share with the designers, subcontractors, and vendors who make our work possible.
We are deeply grateful for our industry partners and collaborators—especially the interior designers and architects whose creativity brings projects to life. Our clients tend to value quality, integrity, and thoughtful planning, which aligns with our own preconstruction process, the RightStart service. We strongly believe that rigorous upfront planning prevents more than 90% of the issues that commonly cause projects to unravel during construction. On a personal level, I love Nashville’s growing international culture, enjoy a wide range of global cuisine, and speak my mother tongue (a German dialect), English, and conversational Spanish from my years living in Central America. At our core, we are builders—of structures, of relationships, and of trust—and we’re honored to do that work here in Nashville.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. It’s been a challenging and often humbling road, but also a very meaningful one. Leaving the Amish community meant starting over completely—new culture, new systems, new expectations, and no safety net. When I returned to the U.S., I had no established network, no clients, and very little capital. Building a business from nothing required long hours, personal sacrifice, and a willingness to learn quickly—sometimes the hard way.
Starting as a one-person operation meant wearing every hat: tradesman, estimator, project manager, accountant, and problem-solver. Mistakes were inevitable, and each one came with real consequences. Later, as the company grew, new challenges emerged—managing people, cash flow, scheduling, risk, and the complexity that comes with larger residential and commercial projects. Like many in our industry, we experienced rapid growth during the COVID construction boom, followed by a sharp slowdown with the recent economic downturn. Navigating that shift has required adaptability, discipline, and honest self-evaluation.
That said, the struggles have been some of our greatest teachers. They pushed us to become more intentional, more systems-driven, and more focused on doing fewer things better. Many of the processes we rely on today—especially our emphasis on rigorous preconstruction planning—were born directly out of hard lessons learned along the way. The road hasn’t been smooth, but it’s shaped who we are, how we work, and the level of care and integrity we bring to every project.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Stellan Eoin Builders, LLC?
Stellan Eoin Builders is a Nashville-based general contracting firm serving Middle Tennessee, specializing in high-quality residential and commercial construction. Our work ranges from custom homes and major renovations to commercial build-outs and general construction, often on projects that require a high level of coordination, discretion, and technical problem-solving. We’re known for taking on complex projects and bringing clarity, structure, and craftsmanship to the process.
What truly sets us apart is our emphasis on intentional preconstruction planning. We’ve seen firsthand how many construction issues stem from misalignment long before work ever begins, which is why we developed a rigorous preconstruction process we call RightStart. This approach focuses on early collaboration with designers, architects, engineers, and clients to align scope, budget, feasibility, and expectations before construction starts. In our experience, this dramatically reduces friction, change orders, and stress during the build phase and allows projects to unfold in a more predictable and professional way.
Brand-wise, we’re most proud of the trust we’ve built. Many of our projects come through referrals from designers, architects, repeat clients, and industry partners who value integrity, communication, and follow-through. We work closely with a strong network of subcontractors, vendors, and creatives, and we see ourselves as builders not just of structures, but of long-term relationships. In 2024, one of our projects was recognized with a “Kitchen of the Year” award by a panel of design judges, an honor we share with the designers and partners who made it possible.
At our core, Stellan Eoin Builders blends old-world craftsmanship with modern systems and planning. Our brand is rooted in respect—for the client, the design, the trades, and the process itself. We want readers to know that we care deeply about how projects are planned, executed, and experienced, and that our goal is always to deliver work that is thoughtful, durable, and built to last—both in quality and in the relationships behind it.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Intentionality.
In construction, skill and experience matter, but intentionality is what turns effort into consistent results. Being intentional about planning, communication, expectations, and follow-through has been central to our success. It shows up in how we approach preconstruction, how we collaborate with designers and trade partners, how we set budgets and schedules, and how we treat clients and their homes or businesses.
Intentionality also means slowing down when needed, asking the right questions early, and being honest—even when it’s uncomfortable. Many of the lessons that shaped our company came from moments where things didn’t go as planned, and those experiences taught us to be more thoughtful and disciplined in every phase of a project. That mindset has helped us build trust, reduce friction, and deliver work we’re proud to stand behind long after a project is complete.
