Hi Branan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
For nearly two decades, I toured the US, Caribbean, and South America as a Country artist, sharing my music on international stages and living the life of a performer. In 2006, I took a leap into entrepreneurship and founded my own record label, Sandbar Records, releasing two albums, Rare & Well Done and Tradewinds. It wasn’t long before other independent artists began seeking my guidance—requesting advice, album photography, design, and production support. That’s when I discovered a passion that would define the next chapter of my career: graphic design, photography, and video production.
Then came COVID. Live music venues closed, and the industry I’d known for decades came to a halt. While many peers turned to real estate, I saw an opportunity to blend my skills and interests in a new way. Combining my hobby of flying drones with my visual storytelling abilities, I launched Sparrow Media Services, creating high-quality real estate listing content for local Realtors. The business soon grew to include Harmony Hill Studio, a 1,200-square-foot, climate-controlled production facility on our six-acre site, offering year-round capabilities for photo and video projects.
As I invested in high-end cameras, drones, and specialized gear, I realized these tools could serve another purpose: private investigations. Driven by curiosity and a desire to challenge myself, I trained extensively and became a licensed Tennessee Private Investigator and TN Armed Guard. That led to the creation of Blackbird Investigations and Protection, providing specialized investigative services for attorneys and private clients who need discreet and reliable information-gathering or clients in need of executive security services for their business, home, or while they travel.
My years working with high-profile clients in the entertainment industry set examples for me in discretion, professionalism, and attention to detail—qualities I now carry into every project or case. Whether producing media, investigating, or offering protective services, privacy and professionalism are at the core of everything I do, and every service is designed to meet the unique needs of each client.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building something from the ground up is never easy, and my journey has been no exception. There were moments of doubt, late nights balancing creative work with business management, and the constant pressure of balancing income while investing in high-end, expensive equipment.
COVID was perhaps the greatest test though. Overnight, the live music industry disappeared, and I had to pivot completely. Starting a media firm in the midst of uncertainty meant taking risks without guarantees, convincing clients to trust me and my abilities outside of what I was known for, and showing them that those skills translated very well into the marketing and real estate industry.
Expanding into private investigations and protective services added another layer of challenge. It wasn’t just about learning laws, regulations, or investigative and tactical techniques—it was about earning credibility in a field where trust and discretion are everything. Licensing, varied types of training (from cybersecurity to tactical training), and building a client base from scratch required patience, persistence, and a willingness to start over in many ways.
Through it all, the struggle has shaped the way I operate today. Every challenge reinforces the importance of preparation, adaptability, and maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, whether I’m behind a camera, flying a drone, gathering critical information for a client, or keeping watch over them for their safety and protection.
