Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolyn Pendleton.
Hi Carolyn, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As a devoted candle enthusiast who often spent generously on candles, one day while shopping at Whole Foods, I picked up a container of beeswax and thought, Maybe I can make my own candles. With lemons already in hand, I added some essential oils to the mix—an impulse that pushed me $22 over my weekly grocery budget.
At home, I sliced the lemons in half, melted the beeswax, and infused it with essential oils. Those first two lemon candles, made with $22 worth of supplies, marked the humble beginning of what would become my business.
In 2017, while working in Philadelphia as an administrator and event coordinator for a local politician who is now the Mayor, candle-making was just a side hobby. When I lost my administrative job, instead of searching for another, I decided to become my own boss. I opened a kiosk in Willow Grove Park Mall, Philadelphia. Within a year, I launched my first store on the mall’s second floor next to Macy’s—at the time, the only Black-owned business there. Candle-making was no longer just a side hustle.
Through my connections in the political world, I was honored to create candles for notable figures such as former First Lady Michelle Obama, producer Shonda Rhimes, and celebrities including Lauryn Hill, Taj, and Eddie George. I even became the personal candle maker for Grammy Award winner Jill Scott.
In 2018, I expanded by opening a second store in Center City Philadelphia at Liberty Place. Then, in 2020, the pandemic forced many changes. I relocated to South Carolina and worked as a graphic designer for a funeral home. However, after being diagnosed with sarcoidosis in 2015, my health declined, making it difficult to continue that role.
Returning to my passion, I developed CBD massage oil candles to help with relaxation. Despite losing my sense of smell due to sarcoidosis, I refused to let that stop me. In 2023, I moved to Spring Hill, Tennessee, fully immersing myself in crafting CBD massage oil candles. I expanded my business to sell on Amazon and Etsy, as well as at local markets and conventions. Additionally, I broadened my offerings to include home decorating services for holidays and special events.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey hasn’t been smooth. Moving from Philadelphia, where I had constant support from family and friends, to Tennessee, where I didn’t know anyone, made it challenging to build a support system. Joining the Nashville Black Girls Tribe helped me connect with new people and gain valuable business support.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in making CBD massage oil candles and my passion is decorating. I am most proud of my endurance. Battling through an illness, yet keeping a positive attitude. What set me apart from others is my positive attitude. Doing what I enjoy keeps me going. I find joy in laughter and enjoying the little things in life like being around family and friends
What are your plans for the future?
I am looking forward to opening another brick & mortar shop. A small gift shop here in Tennessee
