Today we’d like to introduce you to Melinda Perry.
Hi Melinda, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Founded in 2011 by friends Margaret Spickard and Melinda Perry, M2 Exteriors grew out of a shared passion for creating outdoor spaces where people can gather, connect, and enjoy the beauty of nature.
Within just a few years—primarily through word of mouth—the company evolved from a small garden-focused business into a thriving, multi-dimensional design and build firm, taking on increasingly complex and comprehensive projects. With formal training from England’s Oxford School of Garden Design, the expansion of the M2 team, and over a decade of hands-on experience, M2 Exteriors has become one of the most distinguished boutique exterior design firms serving the greater Nashville area.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
“One of the biggest challenges has been mastering the business side—especially financial management, profit margins, and cash flow. Those are very different from the creative side of design. But learning to navigate that has strengthened the company and made us more disciplined, strategic, and sustainable.”
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
“We design and build outdoor spaces that feel both timeless and deeply personal to each client. Our work ranges from intimate garden environments to full-scale exterior transformations, and we guide each project from initial concept through installation.
What we really specialize in is creating spaces that don’t just look beautiful, but live well—spaces that invite people outside, bring families and friends together, and feel like a natural extension of the home.
I think what we’re most known for is our attention to detail and our ability to balance structure with a more natural, layered landscape. There’s a refinement to our work, but it never feels overdesigned.
What I’m most proud of is the trust our clients place in us and the relationships that come from that. A lot of our work continues to come through referrals, which says a lot about the experience we provide.
What sets us apart is that we’re very hands-on and intentional. We’re not just designing on paper—we’re deeply involved in how everything comes together in the field. That level of care, along with our design background, allows us to create spaces that are both thoughtful and enduring.”
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
“I would say communication. In this line of work, there are a lot of moving parts, and making sure everyone is aligned—from the client to the team in the field—is essential. Clear communication builds trust and ultimately leads to a better end result.”
