Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Hardwig.
Hi Sarah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born blind and was diagnosed with a rare genetic eye condition at five months old, but that hasn’t stopped me from wanting to pursue my journey in music.
I started my singing career in my hometown of Naples, Florida when I was five years old and began coming to Nashville yearly when I was eight. I eventually picked up the guitar when I was 12 or 13 years old and started my songwriting journey. After I graduated high school, I moved to Nashville to pursue a songwriting degree at Belmont University. I graduated in 2025, and I am now in the process of releasing more original music.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I was born with a rare genetic eye condition that only left me with light perception so I’ve had many challenges connecting with people in a visual world. I’ve been able to overcome them through my music. During my time in school, I didn’t spend much time with kids my age which made it a lot more difficult to connect with them. A lot of the time I was being taught one-on-one by adults in things like reading Braille and learning how to use a mobility cane. It also took a lot more time to get assignments done because Braille takes a lot longer to read and write than standard print, and I also had to learn ways to understand visual concepts. When I’m performing on stage those challenges don’t matter to me because I’m focusing on doing what I love.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an artist and singer/songwriter. I am most known for videos where I have performed with Steven Tyler, Lauren Alaina, Charles Kelley of Lady A, and Locash. I have videos that have amassed millions of views on social media including a karaoke cover of “Alone” by Heart. I’m most proud of the connections that I’ve made in Nashville and around the world through sharing the gift of my music, and I’ve managed to do all of this while dealing with my disability.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me that the connection that people can make with my music. It matters to me because if my music can connect to someone then that is the greatest reward that I can ever ask for.
