Today we’d like to introduce you to Catron Wallace.
Hi Catron, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began painting years ago as a way to explore atmosphere and emotion through color. What started as a personal practice gradually grew into a full studio career, and over time my work found its way into galleries throughout the southern states — thirteen in total — and I continue to work with two here in Tennessee.
Today I create atmospheric abstract pieces from my Nashville studio, focusing on work that brings calm, depth, and presence into the spaces where people live and gather. My path has been steady and intentional, shaped by long-term relationships and a commitment to creating work that feels grounded and emotionally resonant.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Building a creative life rarely is. There were years when I was working full‑time and painting in the margins, years when I felt completely unseen, and plenty of moments where I questioned whether the work would ever find its place. The practical side of being an artist can be heavy, and there were times when it felt like I was pushing a boulder uphill.
But I don’t give up easily. That stubborn commitment — the part of me that keeps going even when no one is clapping yet — is what carried me through. Every setback ended up sharpening my direction, teaching me how to trust my instincts, protect my vision, and stay committed even when the path wasn’t clear. Looking back, the hard seasons built the resilience and clarity I rely on today.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create atmospheric abstract paintings that explore mood, movement, and the emotional language of color. My work is rooted in subtlety — layered surfaces, softened transitions, and compositions that feel both grounded and expansive. I’m drawn to pieces that shift the energy of a space quietly, through depth and presence rather than noise.
Over the years, my work has been represented by thirteen galleries throughout the southern states, and I continue to work with two here in Tennessee. But what I’m most proud of isn’t the number — it’s the longevity of my practice and the way people connect with the work. When someone tells me a piece makes their home feel calmer or more grounded, that means more to me than anything.
What sets me apart is my commitment to atmosphere. I’m not just making a painting; I’m shaping a feeling. My work is about creating environments that hold emotion, invite reflection, and bring a sense of calm into the spaces where people live and gather.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about Nashville is its creative energy. The city has changed a lot over the years, but there’s still a strong sense of possibility here — a mix of art, music, design, and entrepreneurship that creates a momentum you can feel. Being in that environment has pushed me to grow in ways I don’t think I would have if I’d stayed in my home state of Mississippi. There’s a spirit of reinvention here that I really appreciate.
What I like least is the pace of that growth. Nashville has become a major destination city, and with that comes a level of noise, tourism, and constant activity that can be overwhelming at times — especially downtown. I’ve watched the city shift from a quieter Southern place into something much busier, and that transition has been bittersweet. Some of the old charm has faded, and I miss that.
Even with its challenges, Nashville has been good to me. It’s a place where creativity is taken seriously, where people are building things, trying things, and pushing themselves forward. That energy has shaped my work and my life in meaningful ways.
