Daily Inspiration: Meet Curtis “Footz” Comack

Today we’d like to introduce you to Curtis “Footz” Comack.

Hi Curtis “Footz”, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I got my introduction to learning bass my junior year of high school being in the jazz band in Birmingham, AL (A.H. Parker High C/O ’07); under the direction of Mr. Leroy Allen. He was looking for a student bassist, since the one we had at the time was a senior and about to graduate. So he “volunteered” me for the position. So I went from trombone to bass guitar.
After high school, over a span of a little over 3 years, I completely stopped playing bass to focus on playing sports (basketball) on a collegiate level. I graduated from Lawson State Community College (’07-’09) with an associates degree in music- general studies, while maintaining a full ride athletic scholarship. Transferred to a 4-year college (Stillman College) shortly thereafter, on both an athletic and band scholarship.
Fast forward to 2010, I got word from some friends in the marching band that the jazz band needed a bassist, so I went and asked if I could give it a shot. Definitely didn’t think I would get the position, due to my inexperience with not ever playing jazz on a collegiate level. So now, I’m apart of the marching band, wind ensemble, concert band, all on trombone and jazz band on bass; all while playing sports. Graduated from Stillman in 2013 (Bachelor’s Degree in Brass Studies).
Jumping over to 2020, moving to Nashville was somewhat of a challenge due to Covid, but it’s been a great experience so far.
Have worked with artist such as, Lindsay Ell, Tennille Townes, Tyler Braden, Wheeland Bros., Hailey Benedict, Shaylen, Wyatt McCubbin, and currently touring with Meghan Patrick. I have opened up for various artist as such Blake Shelton, Dierks Bentley, Little Big Town, Skid Row, Darius Rucker, Shania Twain, Brad Paisley, Jon Pardi, ZZ Top, Billy Currington, and host of other artist across all genre’s

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Mostly it’s been smooth, besides the usual life hiccups. My struggles would be missing family due to moving to a new city with no relatives, and dealing with the highs and lows of the music industry changes. Other than that I can’t complain, I’m enjoying my time here.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Currently with Meghan Patrick I am playing bass, keyboard, and singing background vocals.
I’m known for playing bass, and being a comfort to everyone around me on and off stage.
The thing I’m most proud of is the thing that sets me apart; and that’s my ablility to be adapt quickly to any situation I’ve been put in. My mindset is usually, say yes, and figure out how to execute later. Per the people I’ve worked with my laughter and easy-going spirit carries weight.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I don’t know what the next 5-10 years for the industry will look like it’s forever evolving and will forever be unpredictable.
