Daily Inspiration: Meet Flossy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Flossy.

Hi Flossy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Flossy started from a desire to reconnect with my younger self. The 10 yr old who sat on her bedroom floor teaching herself guitar with sore fingertips and fervently scribbling lyrics into her diary.

After moving to Nashville from Denver, CO and taking a musical hiatus for some much needed recentering, I was itching to create again. I’ve come back to music with a fresh perspective — one that is grounded in self-exploration and play.

For me, songwriting has always been a way to process both the internal and the external. I often find myself writing stories about other people, fictional and real alike. My great grandmother’s name was Flossy. I never met her. I barely know much about her. But I know she was the positive female role-model in my mother’s life. I know she loved fashion just like me. I know she was opinionated…also like me. Being Flossy is my way of carrying out that lineage of passionate, creative, nurturing, and daring women that came before me. The women whose DNA I share even if we could never meet.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The honest answer is that most of the obstacles along the way have been self-made. Doubt and insecurities are a bitch. I found myself caught up in the comparison game after moving to Nashville. Can you blame me? You throw a rock and hit a talented songwriter square between the eyes. The longer I sat back, the more I started to believe this whole music thing wasn’t in the cards for me anymore.

Then, there came a point where I was just sick to my stomach with want. My new single “Lucky One” explores this feeling. I say this song isn’t autobiographical, but I’m realizing as I write this that maybe it is after all. It’s about the misconception of luck and how some people just seem to stumble into it. What’s that saying? “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.” I think some philosopher said that, but all I hear is my dad’s voice telling me to put in the work and take a chance.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My music, like the outfits I wear, is a mix of patterns and colors and too many of them. I’m inspired by classic rockers like The Pretenders, pop hitmakers like Sheryl Crow, and indie sad girls like Lizzy McAlpine.

My debut EP, “Lucky One”, features shimmering synths, gritty guitar, and tastefully placed handclaps that suck you into a musical time warp. It heavily draws from 80’s and 90’s pop-rock and leaves you feeling simultaneously contemplative and exhausted from dancing around the room.

Not into all that? No worries — I’ve got more coming through the pipeline. A little grunge, a little country, a little folk. I can’t seem to stick to just one.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My friends are my mentors! I’m so fortunate to be surrounded by impressive and inspiring people who make me laugh and make me want to be my best. My advice? Ask your friends about their hobbies and special skills. Listen to their stories. Learn about their struggles. There are people in your community right now that can mentor you in ways both big and small. Tell them about your dreams and accept their help.
