Life & Work with Emma Moore of Other / Not Applicable

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Moore.

Hi Emma, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a photographer who travelled the world for work. I couldn’t picture myself with a traditional 9-5 desk job, so why not pursue what I love most? When I was younger, I would mess around with my Dad’s Canon Rebel camera, but I didn’t start taking photography seriously until my freshman year of college. That year, I began volunteering for Belmont’s Athletic Department, taking photos at every sporting event, which later led to more opportunities within the department. I have also taken my fair share of photography classes at Belmont ot satisfy my photo minor. Through these classes, I have learned about all aspects of photography. My favorite classes I have taken are Darkroom, Intermediate Photography, and the History of Photography. Through these classes, I was taught how to use and appreciate the rewarding process that is film photography. I have since fallen in love with film photography, and I can’t look back. Right now, I’m planning a few photo shoots for over the summer that will all be on film, so stay tuned!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As someone who has been growing her business for the past four years, I would be lying if I didn’t say there were many challenges that I have faced along the way. Considering my freelance photography business has always been a side hustle of mine, since the beginning, finding a balance between school and work with my business can be a bit tricky. Whether I am in school, being a full-time student while working an on-campus job, or back at home, working 40 hours a week, there never feels like there are enough hours in a day. This past fall, I just got around to making myself a professional portfolio/business website. Something that has been on my to-do list for years. Now that it’s complete, I could not be more proud or more relieved that I can check one project off the to-do list. Although, as every busy person knows, we adapt and we overcome. All conflicts have resolutions. This summer, my goal is to update my website and add more of my student projects from this academic year.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My areas of interest regarding photography are quite vast. I specialize in portrait, sports, and event/lifestyle photography. I primarily take portraits of recent high school and college graduates, families, and couples. Although a majority of my experience stems from my time working for Belmont’s Athletic Department. Working in sports has made my workflow as a photographer more productive. Since everything is under a time constraint, I have learned how to shoot and edit photos quickly and efficiently for timely publication. And as I mentioned before, I really enjoy film photography. Film, to me, is more experimental. In my free time, I really enjoy making vision boards for photoshoots that I have in mind. Doing this helps me keep my thoughts organized and keeps the photoshoot itself more structured.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
If I’m not listening to music, I am without a doubt listening to a podcast. Whether I am working on classwork or editing photos, I usually have something playing in the background. When I get the chance to listen to a podcast, I am always choosing something comedic. My favorite podcast, hands down, is Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. I am obsessed. I try to listen to as many full-length episodes as I can, but often find myself watching clips on YouTube. Conan’s podcast keeps my spirits up and always makes me laugh. You can’t go wrong!
