Life & Work with Justin of National

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin.

Justin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Quick and dirty: Got grounded. Ended up in Marching band. Played music. Loved it. Started writing music. Was coaching gymnastics. Asked to write for a gymnast’s floor routine. Started a composing business. Went to college for music theory and theatre. Wrote my own award-winning show, Legend City. Ended up composing for several other new musicals in development, and producing full-stack for some songwriters. And so it continues.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the creative space, it can sometimes be feast or famine, so stability for paying bills require(s/d) from time to time picking up other jobs that steal time away from the art/craft and further development of the creative business. Focus, too, can be a challenge, to stay one course long enough to see the full fruits, meanwhile feeling like certain dreams/ideas have been abandoned too long. And of course, lack of discretionary funds to freely pursue the fullness of any one idea — it takes money to make money; sometimes things stagnate, which is a real momentum killer.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in contemporary composition, known for highly rhythmic fusions and cross-over genres from musical theatre to rock to gospel to hip-hop music.

I’m most proud of honestly not sounding like anything else that’s out there, having a truly unique sound in all of my compositions and creations.

What sets me apart is The Lord, that access to the ultimate Creator and being able to tap into that creativity through Christ in me.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
When I was younger I thought I was going to be a lawyer–mainly because some of my teachers commented that I would be, based on my ability to ‘argue for better grades’. “Watch out Perry Mason,” they said. Turns out, those clear observations and assessments of what was happening and how to express it simply became the tool I used to now write compelling lyrics with significant depth and correlations.
