Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been remotely smooth haha! But such is life!
At 15 years old, I lost my older sister (18yo) abruptly and tragically– This loss has been a landmark in my life, even 10 years later. She was my biggest fan, believed in me more than anyone, showed up to every show, and I know she’d still be in the stage wings if she were still here.
Navigating that loss at such a fundamental stage in development came with a lot of messy grieving; I fell into a lot of unhealthy relationships and coping mechanisms that often caused me to lose track of the north star I’d been following since the age of 13; I always knew I was made to make music and share it with the world. The journey getting here has been messy and beautiful, and a testament to the necessity of adaptability and resilience one must have to survive this life.
From going to my dream school (Belmont University) at 18 years old to continue my music career, to the world shutting down halfway through my freshman year; From heartbreaks and fall outs, to starting over and moving to New York City to find my voice (and choice); From moving back to my hometown, feeling defeated, to making the move back to Nashville as the woman I now am, not the girl I was when I had left.
The path is long and hazardous, but it’s been the privilege of my life to be a witness to it all.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve been involved in music my entire life. My mother is a music educator of nearly 30 years, so I grew up in a house overflowing with all kinds of music. I was enrolled in piano lessons at the age of 7, and went to the “YouTube University” of guitar lessons at the age of 11– I was always playing an instrument or singing whenever I could. I had always been inspired by songwriting, even in my early childhood; I was constantly reworking my favorite songs to fit my juvenile situations, until eventually, I lived my own experiences and started writing my own music at 12 years old.
I began performing my original songs in front of local (Chattanooga, TN) and regional audiences at the age of 13, and was taking monthly trips to Nashville to sit in on publisher pitches.
As I’ve gotten older and experienced more of what life offers, my music has grown and stretched with me. I am most proud of the songs I’ve been releasing recently, as they feel like a perfect reflection of the journey I’ve been on (that I believe many others can relate to!)
I think what sets me apart from others is the time and experience I’ve gained from the privilege of having such solid support from friends and family. Being 25 years old and being able to say I’ve been pursuing this career for over a decade is an occurrence that doesn’t happen frequently in this industry. I am proud of the time and energy I’ve dedicated through the years.
