Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly Rae Coady.
Hi Carly Rae, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Carly Rae Coady (Lawrenson) began her hair career in 2008. In 2011, her passion for music brought her to Nashville, TN. She built a loyal clientele early on and has been working in Nashville ever since. In 2017, Carly Rae began working for Local Honey in Nashville, becoming their Director of Education and created and launched their apprentice program. She is a well-rounded stylist in cutting, mens cutting, styling, and colour specialist. She was named in 2016 by The Colorist Magazine “30 under 30: The Next Generation of Colorists” . Carly Rae was one of 25 nominated from all over the world for the BehindtheChair Big Shot Editorial category.
Carly Rae’s background in hairdressing all stems from a passion for education. In 2012, she decided to further her career and education by becoming an educator for TIGI, in which she specialized in teaching Cutting and Styling. Carly Rae’s passion for understanding the how’s and why’s of hair care products sent her teaching all around the US. In 2014, Carly Rae became one of 10 hairstylists from all over the US under the age of 25 chosen to be apart of TIGI’s Inspirational Youth first US Team. This program was open to all hairdressers from every brand, salon, and background, and has been running in the UK for over a decade. From there Carly Rae was sent to London to train under Anthony Mascolo (Creator and Founder of TIGI) , Nick Irwin, Akos Bodi, Thomas Osborn, Richy Kandasamy and Christel Lundqvist and the rest of the TIGI International Creative team at the coveted Bed Head Studio. After styling hair for an editorial shoot shot by world-renown Alex Barron-Hough, Carly Rae and the teams work was published in BehindtheChair Magazine, and the magazine created a web-series to follow their journey. Carly Rae was then chosen from the 10 as one of the 2 winners, and was sent to Berlin, Germany to work at TIGI’s World Release event under Anthony Mascolo, Nick Irwin, and the rest of the TIGI International Creative Team. She traveled and educated for TIGI until March of 2017, and is so thankful for her time with that company as the knowledge she gained translates into her work behind the chair and educating other hairdressers.
Carly Rae co-founded and began Hairtalk Collective, a consulting and coaching firm for hairdressers and salons. It all began with Hairtalk Coffee Club, which is a free monthly meetup for hairdressers, salon owners and beauty professionals to meetup, network, learn and grow together from any and all backgrounds. Through that, Hairtalk Coffee Club expanded into a podcast, as well as connecting beauty professionals from all over the world through social media.
Carly Rae’s passion for teaching evolves into her investing in her skills for her career in clients. She has studied in NYC, London, Berlin, and Toronto focusing on color, cutting and editorial styling. Carly Rae believes that education is key to providing stellar services and keeping her clients ahead of the trends
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I feel very fortunate that the professional journey of my career has felt so cohesive. Were there bumps in the road? Absolutely! However, my personality and mindset has always been to learn from every moment, and constantly turn what I’m currently doing into something more or something that will help me in the future. I’d say every hardship along the way has added to my expertise and knowledge, which I’ve created solutions to teach others on how to handle those hurdles.
I think one of the hurdles everyone will encounter, no matter what profession, is how to balance and continue to grow your career when your personal life gets in the way. My advice, is you can control your professional growth more than life itself, so keep growing your professional life so that way you’re at least secure financially or stable in your career when life, life’s.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At my core, I am a hairdresser through and through. It’s been the platform to any accomplishment I have ever done professionally.
As a hairdresser, I am most known for my classic training, my education in the industry, and my diversity in techniques. I do any and all types of colors and cuts. My favorite type of color is color you could be born with, but you aren’t 🙂 I was trained by hairdressers who are pivotal idols in our industry, so my techniques are classic, refined and consistent.
I am most proud of my ability to share knowledge with the hairdressing community in both techniques and business through my education and consulting platform. I am also so grateful that I landed in an industry where we can constantly learn something new so we can give it away to learn even more.
Connecting with humans is one of my favorite activities in life. Through my clients, and my industry, I have the opportunity to connect, learn from and educate to and with all people. The learning never stops.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Success is so subjective. However to me; success is stability. In order to find stability, I had t become so confident in not only my skills, but my ability to connect, relay information, and keep my communication 100% clear with not only clients, but my students throughout the years as well. Directness is kindness. Being explicitly clear in any direction, consultation, or conversation is what builds trust between a client and artist, or a student and teacher.
I think another characteristic that lead to my current success is my desire to constantly want to learn, change and grow. Being willing to change when we learn new information has allowed me to reach goals I didn’t even know were possible when I first joined my industry.
