Daily Inspiration: Meet Grayson May

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grayson May.

Hi Grayson, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When I was a kid, maybe four or five years old, I used to run around with a little play guitar. I eventually put that down and never thought about it again until my ninth birthday party. My Papaw and Mamaw bought me my first Martin, and I was off to the races. I sat with Mamaw and Papaw to watch Hee Haw and the Marty Stuart show almost every night. RFDtv was always on in their house. When I was around eleven years old, I got the opportunity to go on the Franklin Opry in Franklin Pariah, LA. The host of that show was Jody Miller’s long time guitar player and band leader, Gene King. Gene was a true inspiration and mentor in my life. Country music has been my way of life ever since.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There’s not one major obstacle that stands out, but like many others, music has always been what I’ve turned to in personal life challenges.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a songwriter-artist who specializes in cleverness. I strive for every song that I write to have a hook that stands out from the crowd. I love to make people feel nostalgic. This can be nostalgia from last week, last month, last year, or all the way back to your childhood. I feel like nostalgia is one of the strongest emotional forms that humans feel.

How do you define success?
Success is heavily defined by one’s own mindset. Often times, the bar for “success” constantly moves. What you consider success, more times than not, will vastly be different than your perception of success in the future. For my current self, I would define success as accomplishing goals I’ve set for myself. I also define success as striving to be closer to Jesus when it’s hard, being generous when others aren’t, and continuing to work hard towards the next stage of my life while being appreciative of where the Lord has put me in the present.
