Today we’d like to introduce you to B Zhané.
Hi B, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I fell in love with design at a very young age. One of my earliest memories of realizing fashion could become a real career was watching an episode of MTV’s Making the Video, where I learned that Ms. Tina Knowles had designed and hand-sewn the outfits Destiny’s Child wore in the “Survivor” video. Until then, it hadn’t really occurred to me that clothing could be created by hand or that fashion design was something I could pursue myself. That moment became one of the earliest inspirations behind my interest in fashion design and tailoring.
Not long after, I recall taking a pink bath towel, an Elmer’s glue stick, and creating my first outfits, using my baby cousins as models (pictured in article). From there, most of my childhood was spent sketching designs and finding creative ways to bring ideas to life. I was fortunate to grow up around family members who encouraged that creativity. My grandmother, Sandra, taught me how to hand sew, and my Uncle Derick gifted me my first sewing machine. What started as childhood curiosity quickly became a passion I still get to nurture today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. While I’ve always felt encouraged by my community, I’ve also experienced pressure to choose a more “practical” career path, something that felt guaranteed in an uncertain world. As I got closer to my college years, I started second-guessing myself, especially when even my corporate fashion pursuits were misunderstood by people whose opinions I cared about.
There have been periods where I lost motivation to keep designing because we live in a world where creative ambitions can feel unrealistic unless you’re already a household name. At times, it can make artistry feel childish or impossible to pursue seriously. One of my biggest lessons has been learning that growth in the arts is rarely linear. There usually isn’t a traditional roadmap or clear set of checkpoints to measure yourself against.
It takes a certain boldness to continue pursuing creative work without always knowing exactly where it will lead. It also takes discipline to celebrate incredible milestones, like tailoring pieces for a sold-out concert headlined by Latto, and still show up to your desk job the next morning because one opportunity alone doesn’t pay all the bills. That balance between creativity, ambition, and practicality has probably been the most defining part of my journey.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m primarily known as a designer and tailor who specializes in refinement. I’ve always been drawn to the details that transform clothing from something simply worn into something that truly reflects the person wearing it.
What I’m most proud of is my ability to keep moving toward my goals even when the path ahead isn’t perfectly mapped out. Creative careers often require a great deal of faith, discipline, and adaptability, and I take pride in continuing to grow through every stage of the process.
I think what sets me apart is my willingness to remain a student in every area of life, not just within fashion. The hobbies, experiences, and networks I’ve developed outside of tailoring and design have made me a stronger artist and seamstress. Whether it’s studying wine, exploring hospitality, learning about business, or connecting with people from different creative backgrounds, those experiences continuously shape the way I approach craftsmanship and design. They’ve taught me to appreciate process, detail, and artistry in everything I do.
What matters most to you?
Remaining coachable matters most to me. I think it’s extremely important to remain open to growth, new experiences, and learning from the people and environments around you. No matter how much experience I gain, I never want to approach life or my craft as if I already know everything.
