Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Nagy.
Hi Matthew, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
As long as I can remember, all I ever wanted to be was an artist, whether musically or in another form. I feel like I gravitated toward music more because I grew up in a musical family. From my earliest memories, music was always around me I never took any lessons, but I learned multiple instruments by listening to albums and watching family members play.
Being creative in general feels natural to me. I believe there is no right or wrong way to create, so you are only limited by your own imagination. I have always written songs, but around 2020 it seemed like I hit a streak of inspiration that hasn’t stopped yet – hopefully it won’t!
Since then, I have released a full-length album, Shadows in the Dark, plus multiple singles, an EP, and several side projects. I’m currently finishing up another full album with a total of 5 songs. I would usually consider that an EP, but one of the songs is a 17-minute track with multiple movements within it.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. As an independent artist, you face a lot of challenges, mainly financial. You find yourself pouring your heart and soul into being an artist, often giving way more than you’ll ever get back. But for a true artist, it’s not about the rewards. It’s about staying true to yourself and your vision — knowing you can look back and say you never compromised. I find something really beautiful in that.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
First and foremost, I consider myself an artist. If I weren’t using music and songwriting as a creative outlet, I’m sure I would find another way to be creative and express myself. I’m probably most proud of never giving up and staying true to the vision I have for my art.
I’m not sure what sets me apart from others doing what I do. I try to focus on my own work and simply do it the best I can. I enjoy creating something that can inspire others and hopefully help someone who may be going through something. The connection through music is something I find really beautiful.
How do you define success?
I define success as staying true to yourself and your vision. That doesn’t mean refusing advice or help from others, but it does mean not making artistic decisions solely based on what might be popular. To me, real success is creating from the heart and being proud of what you’ve made. If popularity or financial success comes from that, then that’s simply a bonus.
