Today we’d like to introduce you to Hunter Woodard.
Hunter, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a Nashville-area hip-hop artist, producer, and songwriter from Hermitage, TN, known for blending soulful hip-hop, jazz-influenced production, and laid-back, vibey soundscapes with raw, honest storytelling. I began releasing music on SoundCloud in 2013 under the name Grizz2Goofy, quickly gaining traction and earning a deal with Jelly Roll’s label, Crash Out Music.
My debut was on one of Jelly Rolls projects called Whiskey, Weed & Waffle House. It helped establish my presence in the Nashville hip-hop scene, leading to performances alongside artists like Rittz, Lil Wyte, Yelawolf, Caskey, Jelly Roll, Rick Monroe and the Hitmen, and B.Stille of Nappy Roots. I rebranded as Grixxly in 2019 and continue to evolve my sound fusing organic instrumentation, jazz textures, and Southern hip-hop roots into a smooth, genre-blending style.
With collaborations across the BloodFunk collective and a growing catalog of releases, I have been carving out a lane in alternative hip-hop and underground rap. My latest EP, Music City Miracle ft. The Bloodfunks, highlights his signature mix of mellow grooves, live-band energy, and introspective lyricism.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been extremely difficult, but I am feeling better than I have ever felt about my craft. Being a Hip Hop artist in Nashville, TN is a struggle within its own. There is more and more venues popping up that are looking for local Hip Hop artist so that has been a plus. My biggest struggle throughout the years though have been my struggle with drugs and alcohol, but I’m approaching 6 years of sobriety. Things have been looking great honestly.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am known for being a Hip Hop artist, but I also teach skateboarding at an indoor skatepark in downtown Nashville, TN called Rocketown. I teach and sell a wooden skill toy called Kendama as well. Anything made out of wood I am pretty much interested in.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Skateboarding for sure. If I don’t skate I lose my mind.
