Community Highlights: Meet Piper Landis of Dance Cookeville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Piper Landis.

Hi Piper, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I love teaching dance! I have been teaching ballroom dancing since 1999. I teach ballroom, Latin, swing, country, wedding dance preparation, dance fitness, and line dancing. At a young age, I had a strong drawing toward dance, music and movement. I was a very shy child, and dance helped me come out of my shell. It gave me a way to express myself without words and helped build confidence that carried into other areas of my life.

As I built my career, I discovered that my greatest joy was helping others learn to dance. There is something incredibly rewarding about seeing a student gain confidence, accomplish a goal, or simply experience the happiness that dancing can bring. That passion led me to build a business centered on creating an environment where people can learn, grow, and experience the joy of dance for themselves.

I have had the privilege of working with students of all ages and experience levels, from complete beginners to competitive dancers. Every student has a unique story, and I am grateful to be a small part of their journey.

Looking back, I am thankful for the opportunities, challenges, and lessons that have shaped both my business and my life. After more than 25 years of teaching, I still love what I do. Helping people discover the joy, confidence, and connection that dance can bring continues to inspire me every day.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road. Like many small business owners, one of the biggest challenges has been balancing my passion for teaching and the creative side of dance with the many responsibilities that come with running a business.

People often see the classes and performances, but behind the scenes, I wear many different hats. In addition to being an instructor and choreographer, I am also the receptionist, lesson scheduler, class planner, marketer, social media manager, advertiser, and event planner. There are countless tasks that need attention every day, and finding the time and energy to manage them all can be challenging.

Another important balancing act has been maintaining family obligations while growing and managing a business. There are times when the demands of entrepreneurship require long hours and sacrifice, and learning how to balance those responsibilities has been an ongoing journey.

Despite the challenges, I have never lost sight of why I started. My love for dance, my faith in God, and the joy of helping others have carried me through difficult seasons. Every obstacle has taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, adaptability, and the importance of staying focused on my purpose. Looking back, those struggles have helped shape both the business and the person I am today.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I offer private and group dance instruction in ballroom, Latin, swing, country, wedding dance preparation, dance fitness, and line dancing for students of all ages and experience levels.
I believe what sets my business apart is the sincere passion and dedication I have for helping every student reach their goals.
At the heart of my brand is a simple mission: to help people experience the joy, confidence, and connection that dance can bring. I want readers to know that you do not need talent, experience, or even a dance partner to get started. All you need is a willingness to take that first step!

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite childhood memories is when my mother would play the Cinderella soundtrack for me, and I would dance around the living room imagining I was at the royal ball. Looking back, those moments sparked my love of dance and creativity at a very young age. It’s a memory that still makes me smile and reminds me how the joy of dance has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.
