Ronica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Empire Lock and Safe is a family owned and operated business with a legacy spanning more than 50 years. We believe everyone has the right to feel safe and secure, so we seek out the best security hardware products to help our clients protect and secure the people, places, and things they care about the most.
Founded in New York in 1970 by my father-in-law, the company was originally focused on auto and commercial lockouts. When he relocated to White House, Tennessee, in 1980, he continued the business and expanded to include residential and commercial locksmith services. When he was ready to retire in 2012, my husband and I proudly purchased the business and have continued building on the foundation he established. In addition to the the residential and commercial services he offered, we are now offering: multi-point lock repair, high-security restricted keyway systems, electronic and mechanical lock installation, master key design and installation, safe service and repair, door closer installation, code compliant exit solutions, ADA compliant door openers, and 24/7 emergency service.
Today, alongside our dedicated team, one of our sons works with us full-time and is preparing to carry the business forward, ensuring that our commitment to quality service and family values continues for generations to come.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When my husband and I took over the locksmith company, we came from very different professional backgrounds. He had been learning the trade since he was just eight years old, while my experience was primarily in business management and accounting. For me, developing the technical knowledge and skills required in the locksmith industry was a significant challenge—but one that has been incredibly rewarding. Over the years, I have gained a deep appreciation for helping customers solve security challenges and partnering with them to create effective solutions tailored to their unique needs.
Another difficult but rewarding milestone occurred in 2023 when I applied for and earned certification as a Woman-Owned Small Business. It was a lengthy process that involved navigating government forms and websites that were unfamiliar to me. However, this important achievement opened the door to valuable training, meaningful networking opportunities, and new avenues for growth that were previously unavailable to us. Since earning our WOSB certification, I have been able to participate in executive leadership training classes and workshops that I would not have had access to otherwise.
Connecting with and learning from other accomplished women business owners has been both inspiring and instrumental to our continued growth and success. While there have been many challenges along the way, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Those experiences have given me the knowledge I have today and allow me to confidently share that knowledge with other business owners.
