Today we’d like to introduce you to Takela Room.
Hi Takela, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started comedy six years ago with a simple goal: to make people laugh and create a moment where they could forget about life’s challenges. What began as performing at local open mics quickly grew into a passion and a purpose. Over the years, I’ve worked hard to develop my craft, build my confidence on stage, and connect with audiences from all walks of life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road definitely hasn’t been easy. There have been countless sleepless nights, contracts that came to an end, moments where I had to step away from comedy, and personal challenges such as grief and the anxiety that can come with growth and bigger opportunities. Like many artists, I’ve had moments where I questioned the journey, but those experiences helped build my resilience and character.
One thing that has kept me grounded is my brand and slogan, ObeyYourLaughter. It serves as a reminder to find positivity even during difficult seasons. Through that mission, I was able to help feed 180 people in 2026, which was a humbling experience that showed me the true impact of using my platform for something bigger than myself.
Those struggles taught me gratitude, perseverance, and the importance of staying connected to the community. They’ve also made me appreciate the gift of laughter even more, because sometimes a smile or a laugh can make a real difference in someone’s day.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in creating funny and relatable comedy through stand-up performances, comedy skits, promotional videos, and content inspired by everyday life. Whether I’m recreating scenes from movies, sharing childhood memories, or finding humor in common experiences, my goal is to create content that people can connect with and laugh about.
In addition to comedy, I also perform in drag shows at several venues in downtown Nashville. My journey in entertainment began more than 25 years ago performing in local clubs, and those experiences helped shape the performer and creative artist I am today.
What I’m most proud of is my ability to connect with diverse audiences while remaining authentic to myself. I’ve built a career that allows me to entertain through multiple creative outlets, from comedy and hosting events to content creation and live performances.
What sets me apart is my versatility. It takes a lot to wear many hats as an artist, but I embrace the challenge. Whether I’m making people laugh on stage, creating digital content, hosting an event, or performing in drag, I bring the same passion, energy, and commitment to leaving people with a memorable experience. Above all, I strive to use humor and entertainment to bring people together and remind them of the power of laughter.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe some of life’s greatest opportunities come from taking a chance on yourself. One of the biggest risks I took was traveling to Las Vegas for a comedy opportunity that only gave me a 50/50 chance of getting stage time. I took the leap anyway, and it paid off when a scheduled comedian didn’t show up and I was able to fill the spot.
That experience led to performing at two venues and even winning tickets to see Eddie Griffin. It taught me that faith, preparation, and showing up can open doors you never expected. Sometimes you have to take the risk before you see the reward.
