Today we’d like to introduce you to Gina Carrillo.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Nice to virtually meet you, I’m Gina Carrillo, aka Black Widow and am a Spoken Word Artist from Franklin, TN.
I created The Prodigal Poets Poetry Collective and we started Performing all over middle Tennessee!
I became an Author of Poetry Books entitled: Kaleidoscope & Poets United, which can be found on Amazon!
My writings are of Love, Loss, Strength & Resilience, about overcoming deaths, beating cancer, and domestic violence.
I’ve always loved reading and writing poetry and now I’ve been able to turn my pain into poetry and art!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve learned that I wrote more when I was going through something. Writing is very therapeutic and stress relieving. It is a challenge to be extremely creative and have a lot of projects going at one time and then have the obstacle of multiple jobs and school to take up your time too! Life for me wasn’t always smooth, In 2009 my dad passed away from alcoholism and three months later my husband from sleep apnea. That made me spiral into a writing frenzy which I included these pieces in my book Kaleidoscope. In 2018 I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, I had to get a mastectomy, radiation and hormone treatments and then reconstructive surgery. I got a blood clot in my right eye and had to get shots in my eye for over a year. I did regain most of my vision back! Ive also been in Abusive situations and had to get therapy to get through those times!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I enjoy painting Impressionist style creations of Art on canvas too! I recently painted a cactus with blossoms which I have many here at my property in Spain. My Poetry is classified as trauma based and Gothic style. I write dark poetry, yet it is profound, heartfelt and I pull from my true life mostly. I’m known for wearing black and red, loving spiders and also love to dress up while performing too! I’m most proud of my Memorized Poems that I Perform live at Shows! What sets me apart is that I can bring my live painting to a stage or event and also include poetry at the same time!
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
If you would like to collaborate with me, let me know! I love writing to music, collaborating with other Poets & Musicians. Additionally, I enjoy reading other brilliant Poets Poetry works! You can support me by sending me Poetry to read or sharing my creations as well! I’m available in Tennessee or Spain and can join online as well!
