Today we’d like to introduce you to Dustin Chapman.
Hi Dustin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in Whiteville, North Carolina, where music was always a part of my life. Some of my earliest memories on stage involved singing in church, performing at local events, and doing musical theater, etc. Like a lot of small-town kids, I had big dreams but no clear roadmap for how to get there.
That passion led me to study music at Catawba College, where I triple-majored in Popular Music, Music Business, and Worship Arts. Beyond graduation, I pursued a full-time performing career and thankfully have had opportunities I once only imagined–appearing on American Idol, sharing the stage with artists such as Terri Clark, Montgomery Gentry, John Berry, Jason Crabb, and obtaining a full-time position performing for thousands of guests each year at Dollywood in East Tennessee.
My journey, like most, hasn’t been easy. I was diagnosed with an extremely rare esophageal disease called Achalasia at 18 years old. I’ve undergone several surgeries, faced extremely long hospitalizations, struggled with my voice, and worried if I’d actually be able to continue performing, but by the grace of God I’m still performing daily.
Today, I continue to perform while also focusing on songwriting and building my own brand as an artist. Whether I’m singing for a large crowd, or writing a song, my goal remains the same: create authentic art that people can connect with.
At the heart of everything I do are the values I learned growing up–faith, family, hard work, and perseverance. Those values have carried me from a small town in North Carolina to stages all over the country, and they continue to guide me as I look towards whatever comes next.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has certainly not been the smoothest for me personally or professionally.
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced has been my health. As a teenager, I was diagnosed with a rare esophageal diseased called Achalaisa. This disease makes it extremely difficult to eat and caused me to lose a significant amount of weight, leading to severe malnutrition and dehydration that was impacting my vital organs. Over the years, I’ve undergone multiple procedures and surgeries to manage the condition. More recently, I’ve dealt with vocal and throat issues as a result from this disease that have been especially challenging as a singer. There have been moments where I’ve truly wondered if my body was going to be able to allow me to perform.
I’ve also experienced personal loss. Losing my grandparents who played a major role in my life. Much of my music focuses around them and the lessons they instilled in me.
Professionally, the entertainment industry comes with its own challenges. For every opportunity that I’ve received a “yes,” there have been countless rejections, and moments of uncertainty. I’ve learned that success rarely happens overnight. It takes persistence, patience, and a willingness to keep showing up even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.
Looking back, one thing I can truly say I’ve learned through my hardships is resilience. I take no moment for granted–being on stage, writing, simply being able to use my voice–because there have been many days where I questioned how much longer I could sustain my career with my condition. In many ways, the challenges have made the victories more meaningful.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a country singer, songwriter, and entertainer currently based in East Tennessee. While many people know me from my performances at Dollywood, television appearances, touring, etc., my work extends well beyond the stage. At my core, I’m a storyteller. Whether I’m performing a country classic, singing gospel music, or writing an original song, my goal has always been to make people feel.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to perform for thousands, share the stage with nationally recognized artists, and build a following through both live performances and social media. Those experiences have taught me that great entertainment isn’t just about ability, it’s about true connection. My job is to transport people into whatever emotion the song is portraying and I’m blessed to be able to do so.
As a songwriter, I draw inspiration from m real life. Many of my songs are rooted in personal experiences, family, faith, love, loss, and the lessons learned through everyday struggles. I believe authenticity is what connects music to people, and I strive to bring that authenticity into everything I create.
What sets me apart is my ability to blend my vocal abilities, storytelling, and audience engagement into a performance that feels personal. Whether I’m singing for a small crowd or a large audience, I want people to leave feeling like they experienced something real. More than any award, television appearance, or career milestone, that’s what I’m most proud of.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
As a songwriter and performer, I’m constantly listening to music and looking for inspiration and ways to grow. Social media has been pivotal for my career, particularly Facebook and TikTok. So those would be the apps I use the most because they are the apps that genuinely let me connect with people from all over the world and develop real connections with my followers.
