Today we’d like to introduce you to Kitty Amy.
Hi Kitty, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started working in hair salons at the age of 16 in Toronto Canada, I feel like the industry chose me. I left canada when I was 21 to do hair in London uk, then I lived and worked in India for 3 years as a hair color educator, then LA, and have been in nashville for the past 6 years. I love the hair industry, I love hairdressers, and this year marks 20 years in the industry. I purchased fruition salon 3 years ago from heather mccollum who founded it in 2003. I feel called to salon ownership because I love how dynamic a thriving salon feels, I love building stylists up and witnessing them succeed, I am creatively driven, and feel like there is so much room for our industry to grow, and id like to be a part of that. I grew the team at fruition and built on the existing reputation it had maintained in nashville over the pst 23 years. earlier this year I purchased an old church in the heart of east nashville (gallatin and trinity), and am currently renovating it into our second location of fruition salon! this is the biggest project I have taken on and feel so supported by my team, and the Nashville community. we are projected to open later this year with 10 chairs offering hair cuts, colors, extensions and perms. we have a number of curly hair specialists on the team at fruition, and have become known for curly cuts. I am also a mother to two sweet little girls, Florence and Beatrix, 8 and 6.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
being an immigrant from canada, I had a lot of red tape to work through to receive my green card. I am a queer woman business owner and mother in an industry where leadership and ownership roles are disproportionally held by men. though this industry has majority women in its workforce.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
at fruition salon all are welcome to “come as you are”. we have a team of exceptionally talented stylists, some specialize in curly hair, extensions, bonding, perms, barbering, hand painting and razor cutting. we create an inclusive space were all genders hair types and textures are welcome. im so proud of the team, its the energy and talent and connection that they bring to the space that makes fruition what it is.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I am a member of brain trust which is a women business owners organization that has given me community and fellowship and I have learned so much from local women business owners through their experience shares.
