Rising Stars: Meet Majo Herrera of Nashville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Majo Herrera.

Hi Majo, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in México. I started getting interested in drums around the age of 14 and I was very fortunate to have a family that supported me from the beginning and encouraged me to do what I wanted. However, it wasn’t until we moved to Miami that I began taking it seriously in high school and decided to go to college for a music degree.

Then in 2024, my partner and I made the decision to move to Nashville and it has been one of the greatest decision we have made. I have loved all the people I have met and the community I have built. The fact that I can say that I am a full time musician, has been a dream to me. I know that little Majo is very proud of us.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I started to take music seriously at what is considered a “late” age. So while people had been playing since they were 6-8, at age 18 I was relearning the basics. Back in Miami I felt like I had to constantly prove myself to others to be taken seriously because I lacked the skills that many others had already developed.

The music industry is also a very male dominated field and you can often be overlooked because I am not a part of “bro culture”. I am proud to be a woman musician but we are still a minority and to be around men who are constantly telling you that you are not good enough because of your sex, can be a struggle.

However, above everything else, self doubt has been the greatest obstacle in my development and progress. I struggle a lot with underestimating myself and that has made me put walls around me. So it has been something that I have been working on overcoming little by little.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I play the drums as a full-time musician. I have been working with cover bands in downtown Nashville as well as recording and playing with artists at venues in town and on the road. I have been very fortunate to work with artists such as Payton Taylor and Jason McPhail, who have been a constant support from the beginning and are people who I now call my friends. I have also been able to work with the queer community by playing with artists such as Brent Snyder, Brian Falduto, and VJDAMUSICMAN. Another group I am proud to be part of is Music City Queens which is an all women group. Being surrounded by such talented women has been very inspiring to me.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was the kid who was constantly talking and not paying attention at school. I was bad with academics and my mom was constantly getting reports for me not finishing my work. But I was also always attracted towards music one way or the other. I did dancing, I tried piano, I tried guitar, until I got curious about drums and that stuck with me. I would be singing along to musicals and the radio. I would also be constantly doing shows for my family at our family events. In summary, I enjoyed trying everything that was around me at least once.
