Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Margaret Davis.
Hi Mary Margaret, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Adolescent years- ah yes, the beauty, the horror, and the most confusing times of most of our little lives. My dreams were already planned out- I was going to be working in the film industry, preferably in New York City. Until I was met with a roadblock, my own mental health journey had begun. But my battles with my mind and my body were going to play a key (beautiful and essential) role in my adulthood. I am a licensed social worker and psychotherapist in Nashville, Tennessee. I am a queer-identifying, anti-oppressive, trauma therapist who loves working with adult individuals. Before I began working in private practice, I was working in psychiatric acute care with adults and adolescents. The experiences I’ve faced throughout my life have played a meaningful role in shaping my perspective, compassion, and effectiveness as a mental health professional. I’m passionate about working with individuals as they explore their identity, grief, and heal from emotionally immature loved ones, navigate addiction, process trauma, or understand their sexuality. Outside of therapy, I am an Aquarius, Enneagram 2, cat and dog parent—a lover of music, nature, and photography. I believe that love, community, and equality are essential to healing, growth, and connection.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. My biggest challenge was finding the right environment- “Does this practice meet my values?” “Do I have autonomy as a mental health professional here?” “Does this practice feel inclusive?”.. When we feel aligned with our work environment, that’s when the magic truly begins to happen. I wanted to be honest, I did not want to be a blank-slate therapist. I wanted clients to know parts of my identity- including my sexuality. It is important to feel seen and heard in this world- it is important to be myself while having the privilege to sit with people’s pain. A challenge for me was feeling accepted as a queer-identifying therapist living in the South. I have luckily found a welcoming, affirming therapy practice, and I will continue to make queerness known and celebrated.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I really enjoy my work as a psychotherapist. I currently practice at Rose and Sooy Counseling. Therapy can be deeply meaningful, impactful, and healing for an individual. I am proud to be a queer-identifying therapist in the South. I am sex positive and welcoming of all sexualities, identities, and kinks. I am an affirming and liberating presence for all identities. I am a trauma therapist specializing in mood disorders, substance use, family of origin, and neurodivergence. I especially enjoy exploring shame and self-worth, sexuality, and attachment wounds with individuals. I offer Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for re-processing trauma and core beliefs. Together, we will focus on self-empowerment while gently exploring the connection between your mind and body. I love incorporating somatic awareness, mindfulness, and acceptance + commitment therapy. As a therapist, I show up with curiosity and warmth. I integrate culturally responsive and liberating perspectives into therapy, creating space to explore your identity, experiences, and what healing looks like for you. I am a relational therapist- I believe the therapeutic relationship we build is the foundation for meaningful growth, healing, and lasting change. Therapy is similar to a garden – you cannot rush flowers to bloom. I believe in the power of support, safety, and vulnerability.
What does success mean to you?
As I’ve gotten older, success feels like balance. I currently feel successful working for a therapy practice where I am able to be my authentic self. I can identify as a therapist who is openly queer for individuals who may want to talk to someone who has a similar lived experience. Success is tied to living up to my own values and beliefs while empowering others to explore trust within themselves. It is an indescribable feeling to walk alongside another person on their journey. Magic!
