Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachal Nolen.
Hi Rachal , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My dream started in 2nd grade at Spring Hill Elementary, Ms. Dowing class. My childhood was so traumatizing most days at school were my free times to just be “normal” I guess. I knew I loved being around the kids and talking. I knew I loved my mom’s social worker Ms. Tara. I wanted to become a social worker just because she was so nice to us. All the other social workers were seen but presence didn’t make a difference. I grew up with that dream and it shifted into my profession of being a General Manager, which is really the social worker of the building in the restaurant field. After years of taking care of my dad and listening to his dreams of being a comedian I unconsciously grew the passion to join both my love for people and my dad’s love of comedy. Unknowingly, I was always funny but it never stuck out to me because that’s just who I was. As a child I escaped hard moments by laughing or watching funny things on TV. In 2023 I was told I will host a huge event in Memphis that was produced by Samuari Riders MC. JeVon Itson was the person to discover my talents of hosting. Managing comedians at the same time also pushed me towards the stage in another way. Courtney Coleman, Josh ShowTime Johnson, and Chris Owens all told to do open mic one Tuesday night. I had my supporting people show up and I just rocked out. For the next year I became a radio personality and that’s where I met my now employer Anthony Q, southern soul singer, from Memphis. I can’t say enough how positive men pushed me towards my true passion of entertainment. Jevon has a true permanent place in my heart because he gave me a chance solely because he had been enjoying my Facebook lives for a couple of years. That goes to show the saying “never knows whose watching you” is true! I’ve now been doing comedy 3yrs and hosting 4yrs. MemphisMeg was placed at another level.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been smoother than most people’s experience. I was already known for speaking and advocating so most people knew I wasn’t a negative person which allowed me to be embraced differently. The roughest parts of it is not being on stage.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am the personal Hostess to Anthony Q and also a comedienne. I specialize in creating fun memories for all within the sound of my voice. I’m known for these knees, 🤣 I’m a 42 year old dancing machine. I encourage the women to not be shy and just enjoy the show. I’m also known for saying whatever comes to my mind on stage. I’m most proud of being able to create laughter and memories for strangers when I’m personally depleted. The thing that sets me apart most from others is that I compete with my depression each day and every I’m winning more! My mood has never caused me to have a down set.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
When it comes to being mentored by someone, I personally know that person already has to be a strong supporter of you and believe you can do things you may doubt about yourself. And doing just this has worked for me. JeVon has been my mentor and he just started to accept me acknowledging him as such.
