Daily Inspiration: Meet Desmond Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desmond Davis.

Hi Desmond, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey began on the Westside of Chicago, where I was introduced to music through the gospel traditions of my local Baptist church. By age three, I was playing my first songs and received my first drum set, setting the stage for a lifelong passion.
Growing up in church taught me discipline, versatility, and a deep appreciation for music’s power. That foundation pushed me to explore beyond gospel, eventually mastering a wide range of genres including rock, pop, country, hip-hop, jazz, R&B, reggae, funk, and blues. I stayed the course and some notable successes include becoming a 2x Dove Award, Certified RIAA Gold, 2x Stellar Award, ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Award winner, and a Grammy-nominated musician, producer, and writer.
Over the past twenty years, I’ve had the privilege of performing and recording with artists in the gospel, country, and pop world.
Along the way, my brand BlackDrumHippie grew, offering customizable Levi denim jackets, t-shirts, and merchandise, allowing me to connect with fans beyond music. I moved to Nashville in 2019 and the grind has continued. Music has truly transformed my life, and I’m forever grateful for the journey and the opportunities it continues to bring.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not a smooth road but a fortunate one. I was able to move to Nashville with a gig, which made the transition smoother than others I’ve heard. That initial opportunity gave me credibility, but I quickly learned that talent alone isn’t enough in a place like Nashville. Being a good person and building genuine relationships are just as important, if not more so. It was an adjustment for me to regularly interact with people outside of my inner circle to build connections, but I’m glad to see my faith, character, and talent have sustained me in this city.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a musician, producer, and songwriter with a deep passion for music and versatility across genres. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to contribute as both a drummer and writer on several number one records. Currently, I serve as the drummer for Country artist Mickey Guyton, but my journey has allowed me to share the stage and studio with a diverse range of artists, including Hunter Hayes, Benson Boone, Donald Lawrence, John Oates, Brandy, Todd Dulaney, Lainey Wilson, Avery Anna, and many more.
What sets me apart is my ability to authentically play and adapt to different genres at a high level, specifically gospel, country, pop, R&B, and rock. This versatility has become a defining trait of my career and is something I’m known for in the industry.
While I’m proud of my musical accomplishments and the recognition I’ve received, what means the most to me is the family I’ve built with my wife Chanel and our daughter Nyla. Above all, I strive to be genuine and supportive, always rooting for others to succeed. I believe in lifting people up and creating a positive impact through both my music and my relationships.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like best about our city is the strong sense of community. It’s easy to find your people and feel a sense of belonging, which makes it feel like a home away from home. The relationships and support here have been a huge part of my experience and growth.

On the flip side, what I like least is definitely the traffic. I’m used to Chicago traffic, but Nashville is a different story!
