Inspiring Conversations with Sam Goodwin of SGI Ventures

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Goodwin.

Hi Sam, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For most of my career, I have been drawn to environments filled with uncertainty. I started as an entrepreneur, helping build a technology company and an NGO while living in Singapore, and later spent a decade traveling to all 193 countries in the world. Along the way, I earned master’s and doctoral degrees and became fascinated by how people, organizations, and nations respond to change and adversity.

In 2019, during the final stretch of that journey, I was wrongfully imprisoned and held hostage in Syria. What began as a travel adventure quickly became a significant challenge. After my release, I wrote a bestselling memoir, Saving Sam, to share the story and the lessons that emerged from it. More importantly, I realized that many of the same principles that helped me navigate captivity could help others navigate uncertainty in their own lives and careers.

Today, I am an international keynote speaker, bestselling author, founder of SGI Ventures, and adjunct professor of entrepreneurship. Through my speaking, coaching, and training programs, I help leaders and organizations turn uncertainty into opportunity, build resilience, and perform at a high level when the stakes are highest. Looking back, every chapter of my journey, from entrepreneurship and global travel to captivity and recovery, has reinforced the same lesson. We are all stronger and more resilient than we can imagine, and uncertain times are exactly what we need in order to grow.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. Like most entrepreneurs, I have experienced plenty of setbacks, failures, and unexpected detours along the way. Before building my speaking business, I spent years working on startups and nonprofit ventures, some of which succeeded and some of which taught hard lessons. Even my journey to visit every country in the world took nearly ten years and involved countless obstacles, from logistical challenges to financial constraints.

Of course, the most significant challenge came in 2019 when I was wrongfully imprisoned and held hostage in Syria. That experience forced me to confront uncertainty at a level I had never imagined. When I returned home, there was also the challenge of rebuilding. I had to process what had happened, find purpose in the experience, and determine how to move forward.

Looking back, I would not describe those struggles as interruptions to the journey. They were the journey. The most valuable lessons I have learned about leadership, resilience, gratitude, and growth have come from the difficult moments, not the easy ones. Today, much of my work is centered on helping others recognize that challenges are not just obstacles to overcome. They are often opportunities to grow into the person we are capable of becoming.

As you know, we’re big fans of SGI Ventures. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am the founder of SGI Ventures, a company focused on helping leaders and organizations perform at their best during times of uncertainty. Through keynote presentations, leadership development programs, executive coaching, and strategic advisory work, we help individuals and teams build resilience, adapt to change, and turn challenges into opportunities for growth.

What makes our work unique is that it is grounded in real world experience. My framework, Winning Through Uncertainty, was shaped not only through entrepreneurship, global travel, and academic study, but also through real world experiences. The lessons I share are not theoretical. They are lessons that have been tested under pressure and refined through years of working with organizations around the world.

Today, I speak at more than sixty events each year for corporations, associations, universities, and leadership groups. I am also the author of the national bestselling memoir Saving Sam, which tells the story of my captivity and the extraordinary effort that brought me home. Increasingly, organizations are looking for leaders who can remain calm, focused, and effective when circumstances are uncertain, and that is where we add value.

What I am most proud of is the impact our work has on people. The greatest compliment I receive is not that someone enjoyed a keynote, but that they took an idea, applied it in their life or organization, and achieved a better outcome because of it. At the end of the day, our mission is simple. We help people embrace uncertainty, take action, and move forward with confidence.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the most important lessons I have learned as an entrepreneur is that uncertainty is not something to fear. It is something to embrace. When I started my first ventures, I assumed successful entrepreneurs had a clear roadmap and knew exactly how things would unfold. Over time, I realized the opposite is often true. The most successful founders and leaders are not the ones with all the answers. They are the ones who are comfortable making decisions without having all the information.

Every meaningful opportunity I have pursued, whether building businesses, moving halfway around the world, traveling to every country, writing a book, or building a speaking company, began with uncertainty. There were no guarantees of success. In many cases, there was no clear path at all.

What I have learned is that progress rarely comes from waiting until conditions are perfect. It comes from taking action, learning as you go, and adapting along the way. Entrepreneurs who succeed are often those who view uncertainty not as a warning sign, but as an indication that they are doing something worthwhile.

Today, that lesson remains at the center of everything I do. The future belongs to people who are willing to move forward before they have all the answers. In my experience, uncertainty is not the obstacle. It is often where the opportunity begins.
