Today we’d like to introduce you to MARI.
Hi MARI, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is MARI. I’m 24 years old, and I’m from Baku, Azerbaijan. I’m a professional musician, composer, pianist, singer, and songwriter.
My story began long before I understood what music truly was. My family loves to joke that I started singing before I could even speak. Funny, isn’t it? Looking back, it almost feels like life was giving me a little hint about the path I was meant to follow.
Music has always been at the heart of my family. Although my father worked in a completely different profession, music was his greatest passion. He taught himself to play several instruments, wrote his own songs, and learned everything without any formal training. Unfortunately, he never had the opportunity to pursue music professionally because his parents didn’t support his dream. My mother also had a deep love for music. She graduated from music school, loved singing and dancing, but, just like my father, she didn’t receive enough encouragement to continue her musical journey.
Because of that, I grew up in a home where music was everywhere. Our house felt more like a small music studio than an ordinary home. We had everything from a classical piano to traditional Azerbaijani instruments like the Saz and the Nagara. As a little girl, I was fascinated by all of them, but the piano quickly became my favorite. I would sit at the keyboard and play melodies entirely by ear, recreating songs I had heard on the radio or television.
When my mother noticed this, she decided to enroll me in music school. She often says she had one simple thought: “If one day she wants to compose music like her father, she should at least know how to read notes.”
That decision changed my life.
At just four years old, I began my professional musical education. I studied classical piano, spent countless hours practicing, and before long I was performing in concerts, taking part in competitions, and receiving awards from an early age.
Over the years, music has become much more than a profession- my music teacher often said, “Music isn’t just something she does—music is who she is.”
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I truly believe that the best things in life are worth working for, so I’ve never complained about the effort it takes. Of course, spending countless hours practicing, studying the secrets of music, and performing isn’t easy. Even after so many years of learning and making music, I continue to discover new techniques, new perspectives, and new challenges that require time, patience, and dedication to master.
Building a career is especially difficult when you come from a small country where access to the global music industry is limited. But I’ve never let that discourage me.
Every challenge has only made me more determined. I’m already taking some big steps toward my dream 🙂
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a multilingual artist, singer, songwriter, and composer. I speak five languages and write music in each of them, which allows me to connect with audiences from different cultures and express myself in unique ways.
At the moment, I’m focused on releasing my original songs, but my creativity doesn’t stop there. Alongside my work as a singer-songwriter, I also compose instrumental and classical music.
One of my biggest dreams is to release my very first classical album—a collection of some of my earliest compositions. It’s a project that’s incredibly close to my heart, but it still requires a lot of work, so I’ll keep the details a little secret for now.
I’m grateful that my music has already found its audience. Across all platforms, I’ve built a community of nearly 30,000 followers and listeners, and seeing people from different parts of the world connect with my music motivates me to keep creating and reaching even further.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Talent may open the door, but patience and hard work are what keep it open. Believe, work hard, and never give up.
