Today we’d like to introduce you to Cam Shelton.
Hi Cam, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started playing drums when I was three and shortly after started learning piano. I would sit by my dad on Sunday at church and play notes as he played hymns for the congregation. I started playing guitar around age 8 and did my first opening show at 9 years old for a group called “The Remedy”. Moving forward me and my dad put together a duo with him on keyboard and me on guitar. we played several years like that covering anything from The Time to Merle Haggard and everything in between. When I turned 14 and got my hard ship I started to play my own solo stuff or duo with a Cajon player named Eddie Rabb that soon became a huge part of my musical journey. During that same year I won the Arkansas country music awards (ACMA) “young artist of the year”. That started to change things. The year I turned 15 me and Eddie decided to take a trip down to the gulf and play for a week. We booked a 7 days down there and quickly fell in love with the Gulf Coast. I was fortunate enough to have made a strong connection with a few of the bars down there that wanted us back. After that we started going down there every year for a week during spring break and then during the summer.
We continued to play a lot in back home in Arkansas, playing private party’s, bars and wherever else we could fit. Then that same year I wrote a song called “Mommas Bible”, that was the first song that I recorded. I released the song and it started gaining a little traction and won “Song of the Year” at the 2019 Midsouth Gospel Convention. We went on to do a music video for it during that same year. Going into 2020 the music video got nominated for “video of the year” for the ACMA, unfortunately we didn’t win it. After all that I started trying to write more and was blessed to get hooked up with a brother of mine Trey Wilson who only lived 30 minutes from me. we would write several days a week and put together a 3 song EP.
I continued playing stuff through the community and state of Arkansas until I got out of High school. I was asked to open for Riley Green at our Grand Praire Center in Stuttgart, which I gladly took. After that I was hooked and new that music was what I wanted to do. I kept releasing a few songs here and there and put together a band to start playing a few festivals and some opening things. We played a few festivals and small things while I was still traveling around playing solo and duo gigs. In 2025 I was asked to open for Tracy Byrd at the same spot in Stuttgart, and it was incredible.
In 2026 I decided to move to Nashville, I started playing around town and writing with friends that I have made. I got nominated for the ACMA again this year for “Acoustic act of the Year” and won it! I was super honored and humbled to have received that.
That’s as far as I’ve made it but not as far as I am going. Just gotta keep grinding it out.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I like to think that it has been fairly smooth. Don’t get me wrong there is definitely some ups and down for sure. When your driving from town to town in a place you have never been before it gets a little hard. You start wondering if your making any head way or if it is even worth it but someway, somehow the good Lord always shows me that it is worth it 100%. This is what I was born to do.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a solo country artist artist. I write, record, and release my original songs. I also am I performer. I play as a solo, duo, trio, or full Band act. I play in local bars and venues while also touring the southeast, Midwest, and east coast.
The thing that I am most proud of is probably just the fact that I get to do something I love for a living. I think the thing that sets me apart from others is that I don’t just stand up there and sing and strum a guitar. I also play my own lead guitar and a lot of the time I bring out the keyboard (which people love) and rip a couple songs on that as well.
What’s next?
My plans in the future are obviously to keep writing and recording but also I am really looking forward to getting into the festival/opening show circuit.
