Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Carroll.
Hi Olivia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been to drawn to photography since I was a child. I remember taking photos of everything from landscapes, my family, to wildlife and architecture while on family vacations as early as 8 years old. I love the way a photo can capture the emotion behind someone’s story. It seems like magic, but that’s the art of a good photo. In my 20’s I traveled the world photographing the beauty of different countries and cultures. I had an award winning travel blog to share my photos. As my own story unfolded, I fell in love and had two children that I cherish more than words could ever describe. This was when my portrait photography really came to life and I understood the depth of capturing more than just a beautiful image, but capturing the person behind the face; their story, their light, their love and joy. This is my goal now in every photoshoot I do. I want to tell each persons beautiful story through my camera, so I can preserve the light in their lives during that moment in time.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As with any business starting up, I had to learn and adapt as I grew. The patches of struggles taught me more than I wanted to admit at the time. I’ve had to be patient and open to learning from my own mistakes and researching others in my own field to grow from their wins and losses as well. One struggle I can think of off the top of my head is that I had to learn to set rules for my business and stay firm on those rules with each client. I’m the type of person that wants to say yes to everyone but sometimes in doing so, it’s compromising my time, budget, or even skill. So I have implemented standard rules for my business that make everyone happy and it helps me streamline more efficiently as well.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a portrait and real estate photographer. I specialize in proposals and engagements, families, weddings, maternity, and senior portraits. I am very passionate about every photoshoot and delivering timeless images with meaningful storytelling at its heart. In addition to traditional portraits, I use guided movement and natural interactions to create authentic, heartfelt moments.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I feel like flexibility is an absolute must for a photographer. When it comes down to to the technicalities of it, photography is a capture of light. Light is always changing with weather, location, season, time, etc. I have to have flexibility to work with light on any given day, finding the right areas where it hits just right. Working with clients needs and children always requires flexibility as well which I am more than happy to give. Some parents are so stressed for a photoshoot with their young children because they’re “wild” and might misbehave. Well I love wild children! They make the best galleries! I want to capture the joy and love of childhood and they deliver! With flexibility, I can embrace the wild and really capture them in that chapter of their life.
