Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Wynn.
Hi Jessica , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
People often think my story is about changing careers, but to me, it’s always been about helping people come home to themselves.
I’ve spent nearly two decades as a hairstylist, and what many people don’t realize is that behind the chair, you’re rarely just doing hair. You’re listening to stories, celebrating milestones, sitting with people through heartbreak, loss, illness, and new beginnings. I came to understand that the work I loved most wasn’t simply transforming how someone looked ; it was how they felt when they left.
My own life deepened that understanding. Living with stage IV metastatic breast cancer, losing my mother unexpectedly, and experiencing other significant losses forced me to reevaluate what it means to truly care for yourself. I learned that wellness isn’t something you earn once everything else is finished. It’s something you practice while life is happening.
That realization led me to taking my new role as a yoga teacher, wellness coach, retreat leader, and writer more seriously. I knew that I wanted to do more than just lead yoga flows. I want to create spaces where people can slow down, reconnect with themselves, and remember that rest, movement, community, and joy aren’t luxuries they’re necessities.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. Like many entrepreneurs, there have been seasons where I’ve questioned whether I was on the right path. Building something meaningful takes time, and there have been moments where progress felt much slower than I hoped.
Personally, I’ve navigated some significant challenges. Living with breast cancer changed my perspective on time, health, and what truly matters. Losing my mother unexpectedly and experiencing other profound losses taught me that life doesn’t pause while you’re grieving. There were days I was showing up for work, leading others, and building a business while quietly carrying the weight of my own healing.
One of the biggest lessons has been learning that you can’t pour endlessly into everyone else without eventually running empty yourself. As someone who naturally takes care of others, I had to learn to extend that same compassion to myself.
Ironically, those experiences became the foundation of my work. They deepened my understanding of resilience, nervous system health, and the importance of creating spaces where people feel safe enough to slow down. Today, I don’t teach wellness because I’ve mastered life—I teach it because I’ve needed these practices myself.
Looking back, I wouldn’t call it a smooth road, but I would call it a meaningful one. Every challenge has helped shape the person, teacher, and leader I am today. Everything I build is rooted in one belief: fill your cup first, and only give from your overflow. That philosophy has become the foundation of my work and the community I’m building here in Nashville.
As you know, we’re big fans of Overflow Yoga & Wellness / Shearluxe Hair Studio. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At the heart of everything I do is one mission: helping people fill their cup first so they can give from their overflow.
While some people know me as hairstylist and others know me as a yoga teacher, I’m really in the business of creating experiences that help people reconnect with themselves. Whether that’s through a yoga class, a wellness retreat, a conversation behind the salon chair, or something I’ve written, my goal is always the same—to help people slow down long enough to hear themselves again.
I specialize in nervous system-centered wellness. My classes blend intentional movement, mindfulness, breathwork, music, and community in a way that feels welcoming, approachable, and real. I want people to know they don’t have to be flexible, experienced, or have their lives figured out to belong in my spaces.
One thing that sets my brand apart is that it’s built from lived experience, not just certifications. Everything I teach has first been something I’ve had to practice myself. My experiences with breast cancer, grief, entrepreneurship, and simply navigating the demands of everyday life have shaped how I lead. I don’t believe wellness is about perfection. I believe it’s about creating sustainable practices that help us keep showing up for our lives.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the community that’s growing around this philosophy. People come for yoga, but they stay because they feel seen. They find connection, permission to rest, and a reminder that they don’t have to carry everything alone.
As my brand continues to grow, my vision is much bigger than classes. I’m building a wellness community that makes holistic well-being feel accessible and inclusive—a place where people can move their bodies, regulate their nervous systems, build meaningful relationships, and remember that caring for themselves isn’t selfish; it’s essential.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
One thing I’ve learned is that networking is really just relationship building. I think people sometimes approach it like they’re collecting business cards or trying to meet the “right” person, but the most meaningful opportunities in my life have come from genuine connections. The first studio I choose to work in gave me space to learn, lead and grow. Through my time there I was introduced to so many people that have created the community that I have now.
My advice is to lead with curiosity ( something I learned in teacher training) instead of asking, “What can this person do for me?” Ask questions. Support other people’s work. Show up consistently. Follow through. People remember how you make them feel long before they remember your elevator pitch.
I’ve also learned that mentors don’t always come in the traditional sense. I’ve had people mentor me through books, podcasts, conversations over coffee, or simply by watching how they lead their businesses. Sometimes your mentor doesn’t even know they’re mentoring you.
What has worked best for me is staying connected to my community. As a hairstylist and yoga teacher, I’ve had the privilege of meeting people from every walk of life. Those relationships have taught me that everyone has something to teach you if you’re willing to listen.
Finally, don’t wait until you feel “ready” to put yourself out there. Some of the best opportunities in my career have come because I showed up, introduced myself, or said yes before I had everything figured out. Authenticity opens more doors than perfection ever will. In my world there is no such thing as perfection; there is just my best at this moment.. I am learning that sometimes that just has to be enough.
