Daily Inspiration: Meet Lila Gordon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lila Gordon.

Hi Lila, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As an artist I am always trying to improve my work. While its important to sharpen your skills, it would often cause me to compare my work to others and become frustrated. I realized that I needed to go back to my roots and find what caused me to love making art in the first place. As a child I loved drawing dragons, monsters, and other mythical creatures because there really wasn’t any “rules” for how to draw them. I have tried to keep this mindset when making art now as an adult. I love using bright colors, funky shapes, and new mediums. Most of my artwork now is made digitally with an ipad, but I find it cathartic to go back to good ol’ pen and paper on occasion. I love looking back at my old art and seeing my progression and growth. I think little me would be proud.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My artistic journey has definitely been a bumpy one. There are still many things I struggle with, but everything takes time and patience. It’s easy to look at an artwork and think “wow that person is so talented, I wish I could draw like that,” but what you don’t see is the thousands of hours spent perfecting their craft and learning from mistakes. Even after years of drawing, there are still so many things for me to learn. I used to be overwhelmed the amount of mediums, techniques, and skills I still had yet to learn, but now I see it as a fun challenge that I have to overcome. Even now I have to brush up on skills I learned in the past. My art journey has shaped me as both an artist and a person, and caused me to be persistent but also patient with myself.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My current body of personal work is mainly digital illustration. I tend to draw creatures, Dinos, and fanart of things I love (Godzilla, Alien, Daft Punk, etc.) I also don’t shy away from bright colors, and exaggerated features. I think the combination of these things are what makes my art unique to me. Lately I have been trying to explore my style and trying out things like animation, composition, and using new materials.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Without the encouragement and help from my family, teachers, professors, and peers, I couldn’t have made it to where I am today. I want to thank my mom for being my #1 supporter and cheerleader. I also want to thank Adele Seitzinger for being a wonderful mentor, Mitchell White for being a my favorite high school art teacher, and professors Tony Rodriguez and Doug Dabbs for encouraging me and sharpening my skills. I also want to give a huge shoutout to my wonderful friends who have been there every step of the way.
