Over 25 years ago, Smart Skin Med Spa began as the vision of a single esthetician, our founder, Carmen Meherg. Through hard work, dedication, and a passion for helping others feel confident in their skin, she built what started as a one woman practice into a thriving, family owned business.
Today, Smart Skin Med Spa has grown to three locations, two in Alabama and our first location outside the state in Franklin, Tennessee. Now led by CEO Lacey Edwards, Carmen’s daughter, the practice has expanded to a team of more than 25 talented professionals while staying true to the values it was founded on.
As one of the first med spas in Alabama, Smart Skin helped introduce innovative aesthetic treatments, including microdermabrasion, paving the way for the industry in our community. Our continued growth would not be possible without the incredible loyalty of our patients and the dedication of our exceptional team, who work every day to make our mission a reality.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. Like any small business, our journey has come with its share of challenges.
As we’ve grown over the past 25+ years, we’ve outgrown multiple locations and had to relocate several times to better serve our patients and accommodate our expanding team. While those moves were exciting milestones, they also required significant planning, financial investment, and the trust of our loyal clientele to follow us through each transition.
One of our greatest challenges came during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many businesses in our industry, we were required to close our doors for months. It was an incredibly uncertain time, not only for the business, but for our employees and patients. We had to adapt quickly, find new ways to stay connected with our clients, implement enhanced safety protocols, and navigate constantly changing regulations. It tested our resilience in ways we never anticipated.
We’ve also experienced the normal growing pains that come with expanding a business, hiring and developing the right team, opening new locations, and maintaining the same level of personalized care and high standards as we’ve grown. Every challenge has pushed us to improve our systems, strengthen our culture, and stay focused on our mission.
Looking back, those obstacles made us stronger. They reinforced the importance of perseverance, adaptability, and investing in both our team and our patients. We truly believe those experiences have shaped Smart Skin Med Spa into the practice it is today.

We offer a full range of aesthetic and wellness services, including neurotoxins, dermal fillers, laser treatments, Hydrafacial, microneedling, body contouring, medical weight loss, IV therapy, and customized medical-grade skincare. We believe that beautiful results begin with healthy skin, so we place a strong emphasis on education and creating individualized treatment plans rather than a one size fits all approach.
What truly sets us apart is our people. We are a family owned and operated business, and that family culture extends to both our team and our patients. Many of our providers have been with us for years, and many of our patients have trusted us with their care for decades. Those long-lasting relationships are something we’re incredibly proud of.
We’re also proud to have been one of the first medical spas in Alabama, helping introduce advanced aesthetic treatments to our community long before the industry became what it is today. While we’ve continued to grow, expanding to three locations, including our first Tennessee location in Franklin, we’ve never lost sight of the personalized care that built our reputation.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson we’ve learned is that relationships matter more than anything else. Trends, technology, and treatments will continue to evolve, but the trust our patients place in us and the dedication of our team are what have sustained us for more than 25 years.
We’ve also learned that growth isn’t always easy. Every challenge, from relocating as we expanded to navigating the uncertainty of COVID, forced us to adapt, improve, and stay focused on our purpose. Those experiences taught us that resilience, consistency, and a willingness to evolve are essential to long-term success.
Most importantly, we’ve learned to never lose sight of who we are. As we’ve grown from one esthetician to three locations and a team of more than 25 employees, we’ve remained committed to providing honest recommendations, exceptional patient care, and treating every person who walks through our doors like family. We believe that’s the foundation of a lasting business and the reason so many of our patients have trusted us for generations.

- Silver Membership- $140/month, includes one basic facial
- Teal Membership- $225/ month, includes two basic facials
- If you miss a month, you never lose that credit- it rolls over into the next month or can be applied towards deluxe services ( microneedling, laser treatments, deluxe facials etc).
- Our membership offers a $1-2 discount per unit on all neurotoxins
