Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamison Braly.
Hi Jamison, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I had been in video production for 15 years before I turned the dial on my camera to “photo mode”.
I was doing some short videos for local bands and was finding that musicians shared and appreciated photos more than videos. I couldn’t understand it, so rather than try to figure out why, I tried my hand at photography and found that even my early photos, with all their mistakes, got way more appreciation. to the point that bands were offering me money to show up at their gigs. Since then, I have photographed comedians, larger names like Lyle Lovette and Ella Langley, and spent more time doing portrait work (Mostly of musicians and other artists)
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The entry point has been easy. I know how to talk to touring managers without any fan-gush, and my turnaround time to deliver photos is fast. I have run into some touring managers who were incredibly strict on their pit rules, and some who changed their rules in the middle of a show, but concert photography, in my experience, has been such an uncompetitive field. Yes, everyone and their brother does it, but everyone in this world is supportive of each other, works well together, and passes gigs off to oneanother
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Most people have known me for my video work (Weddings, live music, and short films), but considering those aspects of the creative world are niche and sometimes not accessible to most people, my photography work (Live music and portrait) has started to become what people call me for. I am addicted to controlling light in my portrait photography and have come to love the editing process; pulling out all the aspects that make a portrait good (And fixing all the flaws!)
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
There are a handful of bands in the Chattanooga, TN area who have considered me their go-to, who have trusted me and insisted I be at their gigs. And without them, I wouldn’t have been able to expand to Nashville and Atlanta. Starting with The Essentials, a 90s cover band, Hard Luck, and Courtney Cowart and her band Bad Matador, all out of Chattanooga. Beyond being INCREDIBLY talented artists, they have all become dear friends of mine and been huge cheerleaders of my work.
