Today we’d like to introduce you to Emi Duncko.
Hi Emi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, I moved to Nashville in the fall of 2019 to attend Belmont University. I have been singing and playing music all my life, so I intended to pursue a degree in Audio Engineering. Along the way, I picked up a minor in Video Production, which is where I first got an in-depth look at what it is like to be behind a camera. I soon fell in love with the entire process of video, from lighting and composition to editing. At the time, I lived in a house show venue and noticed a lack of photographers. Shows would happen, and we would have no evidence of the show actually occurring. One day, I decided to pick up my old Polaroid camera and take some photos of a show. Soon, people started to ask me to take photos at their shows, and it just snowballed from there. I found that I loved taking photos. I graduated from college, got a professional camera, started booking studio time, and started branching out from just shooting shows into creative portraiture. Now, I shoot for an online music publication (shoutout Bell Music Mag!), and getting to shoot big artists in big venues is a dream come true. I still do videography, DJ, and make music! My artist name is Rose Corpse, and my debut EP, “Where’sTheParty@?” releases July 24th. I like to think I found my passion for photography through lucky circumstances and happy accidents. I have made so many friends and connections through photography and gained a self-confidence I didn’t know I had. It has truly changed my life!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Learning how to grow a business from scratch was (and still is) a struggle for me, especially since I didn’t plan to start one in the first place. I have never been great at marketing myself, and I tend to let my photos do all the talking for me. Learning how to interact with new people, travel to new places, and navigate different environments has been challenging for me but extremely rewarding.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a videographer, photographer, and musician who specializes in concerts and creative portraiture. I also do graduations and events! My music is under the name Rose Corpse, and my debut EP, “Where’sTheParty@?” releases July 24th. I am most proud of how much I have learned since I first started taking photos and my creative evolution. I am no longer afraid to step outside the box or take the box and flip it completely on its head. I love when my clients and I can put our creative brains together to create something completely new and different. I also love to create a low-pressure, go-with-the-flow atmosphere at my shoots. It really helps both me and my client step away from the stress and pressure of a “professional” shoot, and allows us to just have fun. There is a certain magic that happens during a shoot when my client and I let ourselves go and fall completely into the flow of the shoot. It is a difficult feeling to explain, but when a client’s vision is actualized, the electricity in the air is palpable. It’s one of my favorite things!
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
One of the most important lessons I have learned along the way is that being a kind, good person can take you places you’d never thought possible. It is so important in this day and age to just be kind to others. Be a good person, and the universe will give back to you!
