Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Knox.
Hi Jonathan , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always admired photography and film, but for a long time, I never thought I was creative enough to pursue either. I started by taking photos and videos on my iPhone, and before long, friends and family began asking me to capture moments for them. Eventually, I started helping a friend with his clothing business, where I photographed customers after they purchased his products. That small opportunity sparked something bigger, and here we are today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road, but I am grateful for the journey. I like to say I am a late bloomer because I didn’t begin this journey until after I graduated from college. One of my biggest challenges was finding opportunities and a creative community while being from such a small town. With the style of photography I was passionate about, there weren’t many opportunities to shoot editorial campaigns or create the type of work I envisioned in Havana, Alabama. Even so, I stayed the course. Over time, I found my community, and the opportunities began to follow.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a commercial and editorial photographer, creative director, and filmmaker based in Birmingham, Alabama. My work focuses on creating cinematic, story-driven imagery that blends fashion, portraiture, and film. Whether I’m working with brands, athletes, or individuals, my goal is always the same: to create visuals that feel intentional, timeless, and emotionally connected.
I’m probably best known for my editorial approach to photography. I love taking ideas that could exist in a magazine or campaign and bringing them to life through thoughtful lighting, color, styling, and storytelling. Beyond client work, I also create personal projects like my Summer in the Souf series, which celebrates Southern culture through a modern, cinematic lens while bringing creatives together to collaborate and build community.
What does success mean to you?
My definition of success is rooted in inner happiness. I don’t measure success by the number of followers I have or the amount of money I make. To me, success is finding peace in doing what you love and having the opportunity to do it alongside the people you love.
