Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Maassel.
Hi Morgan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started playing violin when I was seven and loved it so much that I decided to follow that passion to Nashville to attend Belmont University. After graduating, I decided to stay in the area. I teach in Franklin and Burns, perform in the greater Nashville area, and record in my home and in Nashville.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course not- it’s been full of twists and turns, but that’s what keeps things interesting. I began my career during Covid. I had to be very creative to make money and get the ball rolling. Performance opportunities were slim at the time, so I decided to teach. It surprised me how much I loved teaching! I also discovered that I disliked certain things that used to be the primary goal. “The dream” has changed a lot over the last ten years, but thankfully this is a very flexible career. There are so many cool things I get to do!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a violinist who teaches, performs, and records. I was a commercial violin major at Belmont. This means I not only took classical lessons/ensembles but also learned fiddle/alternative styles. It has helped me be very adaptable and creative. Because of my diverse education, I’ve had the opportunities to perform in so many different settings: orchestras, country bands in various venues/festivals, weddings, churches, etc. I’ve also been able to teach multiple styles to young players in private lessons and music camps. No two days are ever the same for me.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
My favorite performance setting changes all the time. Despite my alternative education, at the moment, my favorite thing to do in play in an orchestral setting. I don’t have a favorite genre, but I definitely get fixated on various genres for a time. Currently, I’m in a very classical mood.
