Today we’d like to introduce you to Landon Whitaker.
Hi Landon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started as a bored 12 year old with my friend with old studio gear my dad had in the attic, and downloaded garage band on his old mac he had in there too. That was my first DAW and i kinda took a liking to it as I had spent most of my life obsessing over electronic drum pad youtube videos, artists like skrillex, and just other musical stuff, but never tried to actually create any, so this was new. I loved it and kept going and swore me and my friend were gonna be the next rae stremmurd or something, posting to soundcloud and sending countless links to all the people we knew and probably annoying them, but we didnt care. We were hype to make something that sounded like what we heard all the time, rap music, and it was 2019 so artists like lil tecca, juice wrld, nle choppa, etc. Then Covid hit, and forced us to stay inside, this was life changing for me. It gave me nothing else to do except create and hone in on my craft, which at first was just producing as i let my friend do the rapping, cause i was honestly scared to do it, but that only lasted so long. A year goes by from when we started and we finally started putting music on spotify, I had since moved from garage band to fl stu where i reside, and we were finally getting better and making something that actually might do something. Then my friend and I didnt share the same passion, he decided to step away from the music and focus on other things, which is just part of life. That left me with no choice but to start trying to do both vocals and production and make my own stuff, I had made songs alone before but just messing around, but even then I commited. I made some horrible hits forsure, but i kept believing and building and pushing and started making stuff i was proud of. Unfortunately, after 2 more years of no signs of growth in numbers or anything, i grew tired of trying. I was also getting older and taking on more responsibilities so i had less time for it. Then a little over a year and a half ago, i stumbled upon some old songs i had made and since removed from streaming services, in my email. they brought back a spark of joy and motivation. I then reposted it relogged into old socials to premote again, and ever since, ive been trying to do what i always wanted to, even with the heavy responsibilities life throws at me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Struggles were as listed in the last answer, but Id more specifically just say, battleing the concept that perfection is unrealistic and ultimately has held me back for so long, still does, and getting caught up in the numbers was discouraging aswell, trying to strengthen my faith in my ability still currently.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Im a Sheet Metal Tech for the S.M.A.R.T. Local #177, and I put up ventilation duct work in buildings all around Nashville, TN. Id probably say im most proud of the fact that I came into this field knowing nothing of the trade, and within a year I have learned quite a bit, and Its not easy! Mentally, nor physically.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
The art and leaving behind a brand people can resonate with the same way i have my whole life with other peoples art.
