Today we’d like to introduce you to Qiana Scales.
Hi Qiana, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
People often see the podcast, the boutique, or me on stage with a microphone, but what they don’t always see is the journey that brought me here.
I’ve never been someone who believed in waiting for the “perfect time.” I’ve always believed in creating opportunities instead of waiting for them to knock.
My entrepreneurial journey began more than two decades ago when I became a self-published author, releasing my first novel, The Ultimate Betrayal, in 2003. That experience taught me something that has stayed with me ever since: if you have a vision, you can’t wait for someone else to validate it. Sometimes you have to bet on yourself first.
Over the years, that mindset led me to build multiple brands rooted in connection and community. I founded The Closet Experience Boutique, where I wanted women to experience more than shopping. I wanted them to walk away feeling confident, seen, and empowered. That’s why I became known as “The Retail Therapist.” Fashion was simply the vehicle—the real mission was helping people rediscover how they saw themselves.
That same passion for people eventually led me behind the microphone. I created the I AM Qiana Scales Podcast because I noticed that so many conversations online focused on controversy instead of clarity. I wanted to create a space where real people could tell real stories that educate, inspire, and challenge us to think differently. My brand has always been built on one simple philosophy: Real Talk. Real People. Relevant Conversations. No Gossip… Just Gems.
Today, the podcast reaches audiences through YouTube, Facebook, iHeartRadio, Spotify, and other streaming platforms, where I’ve had the privilege of sitting down with entrepreneurs, artists, community leaders, and everyday people whose stories deserve to be heard. Every guest who sits on my signature Blue Velvet Couch reminds me why I started—to help people see themselves in someone else’s journey.
What’s unique about my story is that I didn’t abandon one dream to pursue another. I allowed each chapter to build on the last. Author. Entrepreneur. Boutique owner. Speaker. Podcast host. Conversation curator. Each experience has strengthened my ability to connect with people in meaningful ways.
Along the way, I’ve been humbled to be featured twice by Nashville Voyager Magazine and to receive the 2025 Privy Legacy Award, recognizing leadership, community impact, and service. Those moments are meaningful, but what matters most to me is knowing that my work encourages someone else to keep going.
I’m still evolving. I’m still learning. I’m still building. Whether I’m interviewing a legendary DJ, spotlighting a local Black-owned business, hosting an event, or helping a customer find the perfect outfit, my purpose remains the same: to create experiences that leave people better than they were before.
At the end of the day, I’m just trying to help the people… help the people.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not. If I’m being honest, entrepreneurship will humble you.
One of my biggest challenges has been learning how to build multiple businesses while still working a full-time career. For years, I balanced the responsibilities of corporate America with the demands of entrepreneurship, often working long days before coming home to pour into my own dreams. There were plenty of moments when exhaustion, self-doubt, and limited resources made me question whether I could continue.
Financially, there have been seasons where I had to make difficult decisions about where to invest my time and money. Every microphone, camera, light, marketing campaign, inventory purchase, and business expense represented another investment in a vision that hadn’t fully paid me back yet. Entrepreneurship requires you to believe in tomorrow while paying today’s bills.
I’ve also learned that visibility doesn’t always equal profitability. People may see a successful podcast episode, a packed event, or an active social media presence, but they don’t always see the countless hours of planning, editing, researching, networking, and problem-solving that happen behind the scenes. Success is rarely as glamorous as it appears online.
More recently, I’ve been navigating a career transition that has challenged me in new ways. Instead of viewing it as a setback, I’ve chosen to see it as an opportunity to trust myself, lean into my purpose, and continue building the life I’ve been preparing for all along. Sometimes what feels like uncertainty is actually God creating space for your next chapter.
If there’s one lesson I’ve learned, it’s this: resilience is a muscle. Every obstacle has strengthened my faith, sharpened my vision, and reminded me why I started. I don’t believe success is about avoiding struggles. I believe it’s about refusing to let those struggles define your ending.
Today, I don’t see my journey as a series of setbacks. I see it as proof that purpose will keep calling your name, even when the path gets difficult. And every challenge has made me a better entrepreneur, a better storyteller, and a better servant to the community I love.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What I create isn’t just content—it’s conversations that leave people thinking long after the cameras stop rolling.
I’m the creator and host of the I AM Qiana Scales Podcast, a speaker, entrepreneur, and conversation curator based in Nashville. Through my signature Blue Velvet Couch, I create a space where entrepreneurs, artists, community leaders, and everyday people can share authentic stories that educate, inspire, and challenge us to grow.
My brand is built on one philosophy: Real Talk. Real People. Relevant Conversations. No Gossip… Just Gems. In a world where headlines often chase controversy, I’m intentional about creating conversations that offer value, perspective, and hope. Every episode is designed to leave my audience with something they can apply to their own lives.
Beyond the podcast, I’m the founder of The Closet Experience Boutique, where I’ve become known as The Retail Therapist because I’ve always believed confidence starts from the inside out. Whether someone leaves my boutique with a new outfit or leaves my podcast with a new outlook, the mission is the same—to help people become the best version of themselves.
What sets me apart is that I don’t interview people to collect sound bites. I interview people to uncover the stories behind their success, their struggles, and their purpose. I want my guests to feel seen, and I want my audience to see themselves in every conversation.
The accomplishment I’m most proud of isn’t an award or a milestone—it’s building a platform where people trust me with their stories. To me, that’s the greatest compliment a storyteller can receive.
As my platform continues to grow, my vision is to expand the I AM Qiana Scales Podcast into television, national media, and live experiences while continuing to spotlight the voices, businesses, and stories that deserve to be heard.
At the end of every conversation, my goal is simple: I’m just trying to help the people… help the people.
How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happiest is watching someone leave better than they came.
Whether it’s a podcast guest who says, “I’ve never shared that story before,” a woman who walks into my boutique unsure of herself and leaves standing a little taller, or someone who sends me a message saying a conversation helped them through a difficult season—that’s what fuels me.
I’ve always believed my purpose is bigger than entertaining people. My purpose is to encourage, educate, and create spaces where people feel seen, heard, and valued. If I can help someone change the way they see themselves or inspire them to take the next step in their own journey, then I’ve done what I was called to do.
Of course, my faith, my husband, my family, and the relationships I’ve built over the years are at the center of my happiness. They remind me that success isn’t measured only by achievements—it’s measured by the lives you impact and the legacy you leave behind.
At the end of the day, happiness for me isn’t found in titles or recognition. It’s found in purpose. It’s knowing that through every conversation, every event, every business venture, and every opportunity, I’m living out my mission of helping the people… help the people.
